Chapter 2: The Chaos Unfolds

1069 Words
Maggie’s trip wasn’t graceful. In fact, it was the kind of trip that could only come from someone who had just realized the full magnitude of their screw-up. As her feet tangled and she crashed into the security panel, the world seemed to freeze for a moment. BEEP BEEP BEEP. The sound cut through the air like a knife. Maggie froze, wide-eyed, her face drained of all color. "I—I'm sorry. Did I do that?" she stammered, her voice high-pitched, like a kid caught stealing cookies. Tony’s stomach dropped. It wasn’t supposed to go like this. Nothing was supposed to go wrong. Yet here they were, standing in the middle of the Celestial Casino, a multi-billion-dollar establishment with state-of-the-art security, and Maggie had just set off an alarm. "Act natural," Tony hissed through clenched teeth, giving her a death stare. Maggie nodded and straightened up, trying to make it look like she’d just tripped for dramatic effect. She awkwardly adjusted her oversized glasses and muttered, "Oh, I’m just clumsy. Happens all the time." Behind them, Dez was rubbing his nose, his eyes watering. "This place is so dusty," he complained, looking like he might start sneezing again. "I can’t even—" “Dez! Shut up!” Tony snapped, still trying to keep his cool. But it was too late. The security guard they’d tried to pass earlier was already on his radio, speaking in low, suspicious tones to someone on the other end. Tony’s mind raced, heart pounding in his ears. They had less than a minute to get their act together, or it was all over. Renee, oblivious to the danger, was still chatting away, obliviously narrating her life in full volume. "And that’s when I realized—oh my god, I’m that person now. You know the one who says everything out loud without thinking? It's so embarrassing, right?" Big Joey, who had been standing awkwardly with his fists clenched, suddenly stepped forward and dropped his voice to a low, gravelly tone. “Alright, Tony, we need to get moving. Can’t stand around here all day.” Rigg, the head of security, hadn’t taken his eyes off them. He was still eyeing their IDs, scrutinizing every detail. "Tony Tightroom?" Rigg repeated, sounding more suspicious by the second. Tony cleared his throat. "Uh, yeah. You know, minimalist thing. My parents—" "Yeah, you mentioned that," Rigg cut him off, giving Tony a look that said he didn’t believe a word of it. There was a long, uncomfortable pause as Rigg examined them like they were insects under a magnifying glass. Tony could almost hear the gears turning in the security guard’s mind. Finally, with a gruff sigh, Rigg waved them through, muttering something under his breath. Tony almost didn’t believe it, but they were in. “Thanks, buddy,” Tony said, grinning like a man who’d just pulled off the greatest heist of all time. He motioned for his team to follow him, and they slunk past the security desk as if nothing had happened. As soon as they were out of earshot, Maggie let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. "Phew. That was way too close. Maybe we should’ve practiced more before doing this." “We don’t have time for practice!” Tony barked. “You messed up. Big time. But it’s not over yet. Get it together, Mag." Maggie gave him a quick nod, then refocused on her tablet. She furiously typed away, muttering to herself, “Okay, okay. I can fix this. No more mistakes.” They made their way deeper into the casino, walking past rows of blinking slot machines and flashing lights. The noise of the place was overwhelming—the clatter of chips, the whoosh of roulette wheels spinning, the distant cheers from high-stakes games. But underneath it all, Tony could feel the tension in the air. It was suffocating. “This place is a fortress,” Dez muttered as they reached the service elevator. "How are we getting into the vault?" “Don’t worry about it,” Tony said, keeping his voice low. “Mag’s got this. She’s in charge of breaking the security system.” “Right,” Maggie said, tapping away on her tablet. "Just need access to the mainframe for a second…" “Mag, the real problem is that we just set off an alarm,” Tony whispered harshly. “That’s going to raise suspicion.” “I know, I know,” Maggie shot back. “But it’s fine. It’s fine. I’ve got this. Trust me.” Before Tony could respond, Dez sneezed again. And again. “Bless you,” Renee said absently, distracted by the chandelier overhead. Bobby “Boom-Boom” Malone gave Dez a look. "Dude, if you sneeze again, I swear to god, I will personally throw you out of this casino.” Dez blinked at him. “What’s your problem?” Bobby just shook his head. "You’re ruining the vibe." They reached the service elevator, and Tony stepped forward to press the button, but the moment his hand hovered over it, a sharp voice from behind them called out. “Hey, you!” Tony’s heart skipped a beat. He spun around, only to see a security guard walking toward them. His walk was deliberate, like a predator closing in on its prey. “s**t,” Tony muttered. “Act natural,” Tony hissed under his breath. And then it happened. Big Joey, trying to play it cool, stepped right into the security guard’s path. “Hey, buddy,” Joey said, raising a fist in greeting, “You looking for something?” The guard’s eyes narrowed. “You know, I think I am,” he said, moving even closer. Before Joey could react, the guard’s radio crackled to life, a voice cutting through the static. “We’ve got a hit on the alarm. Everyone’s on alert.” Tony felt the blood drain from his face. “Oh, this is it,” he muttered. “We’re screwed.” Big Joey, ever the optimist, cracked his knuckles and said, “Nah. We’re good.” But Tony wasn’t so sure anymore. The clock was ticking, and their window for escape was closing fast. “Let’s move,” Tony ordered, shoving the team into the service elevator. As the doors closed behind them, Tony could only hope they hadn’t just sealed their fate.
