Chapter 3: The Ghost in the Machine

The elevator ride down felt like it took a lifetime. Tony stood at the front, arms crossed, eyes scanning the control panel. He could feel the heat of the situation pressing in on him, and every second that ticked by only made it worse. He tried to maintain the same confident air, but inside, his thoughts were swirling. The plan was crumbling, and there was nothing he could do to stop it. He had the nagging feeling that the universe had just conspired against them. Dez was standing in the back corner, still sniffling and rubbing his nose. "If I sneeze one more time, I'm gonna blow this whole operation. Can we open a window or something?" he muttered. "We’re underground, Dez," Bobby “Boom-Boom” Malone said, eyeing Dez with a look that could burn a hole through a wall. "And if you sneeze again, I swear to God, I will toss you out of this elevator." Dez opened his mouth to respond but was cut off by a sudden ding as the elevator arrived at its destination. The door slid open, and a flood of fluorescent light flooded the small space, almost blinding them. Tony quickly waved his hand in front of his face to adjust, trying to appear calm. The underground level of the casino looked like something out of a high-tech spy movie: sleek, futuristic, and unnervingly clean. There were more security cameras down here, the kind that could track your every move and know exactly what you were doing. The last thing they needed was to be caught on one of those. Tony gestured for everyone to follow him, moving with purpose as if he knew exactly what he was doing. But in reality, he didn’t. Maggie was already back at her tablet, fingers flying over the screen as she muttered to herself. "Okay, I’ve bypassed the secondary security. Just need to get into the mainframe… and… oh wait, hold on. Who changed the Wi-Fi password?!" Tony spun around. “Maggie, seriously, we’re in a high-stakes casino. You need to stop playing with the Wi-Fi and get us to that vault!” “I’m not playing with it!” Maggie shot back, still focused on the tablet. “But these systems are complicated. One wrong move, and we could set off more alarms. You want me to do it right or not?” Tony clenched his jaw, trying to control his frustration. "Fine, just hurry up." Big Joey, ever the silent powerhouse, was already scanning the room. He had his eyes on the vault door at the far end of the hallway. He cracked his knuckles and moved toward it, trying to keep calm, but his fists were still clenched in anticipation. “That’s the vault,” he murmured, “Right there.” “Not yet,” Tony said, cutting him off. “Maggie’s got to finish the hack first. We wait for the green light.” “Green light, red light. You keep saying that, but we’ve been standing here for twenty minutes.” Bobby rolled his eyes, sounding irritated. “Just tell me when to blow something up, alright?” Tony opened his mouth to respond but was interrupted by another ding from the elevator. “s**t,” Dez whispered, his nose twitching. "Not again." A security guard stepped out of the elevator, holding a clipboard, completely oblivious to the team’s presence. Tony didn’t panic. Not yet. But they were in a tight spot. This could go south faster than a speeding car if they weren’t careful. “Act normal,” Tony whispered urgently, taking a few slow steps toward the wall, leaning against it in a way that might have looked natural if it weren’t for the fact that they were all pretending to be janitors, random employees, and eccentric gamblers. Renee was pretending to be busy on her phone, but Tony could see the panic in her eyes. She wasn’t good at this whole "acting normal" thing. She was too much of an open book, her thoughts splattered across her face like neon signs. Big Joey, in a rare moment of subtlety, pretended to drop his duffel bag, acting as though he were fumbling for something inside. “You looking for something, buddy?” he asked in his usual deep, gravelly tone, his hands still buried in the bag. The guard glanced over, then did a double-take, eyeing the duffel bag suspiciously. "You… sure you're in the right place?" His tone was laced with doubt, but he didn’t seem ready to pounce just yet. He glanced at Tony for confirmation. Tony held his breath, thinking fast. "Yeah, yeah, we’re just getting things ready for the big game,” he said, flashing a grin that was supposed to look confident but probably came off as panicked instead. “We’ve got everything under control." The guard didn’t seem fully convinced but didn’t press further. With a grunt, he turned and walked away, muttering something about paperwork. Tony let out a long sigh of relief. "Alright, good. Keep it together, everyone." “That was close,” Dez whispered, rubbing his nose again. “Man, I need tissues.” “I swear to God, Dez, if you sneeze now—” Bobby warned, his tone dangerously close to a threat. Meanwhile, Maggie was still absorbed in her tablet, eyes narrowed with concentration. She looked up briefly and smiled, a touch of triumph in her expression. "I’ve got it. The vault’s open. But you guys need to move fast." Tony immediately stepped forward, his posture rigid with anticipation. “This is it, people. Let’s get in and out before anything else goes wrong.” They approached the vault, and Big Joey’s hands went to work, pulling out the explosives. He handled them with the care of a surgeon, knowing that one wrong move could end them all. The moment he placed the charges on the door, the sound of a dog barking from nearby made Tony’s heart skip a beat. "Seriously?" Tony muttered under his breath. Dez, who’d been looking up at the security cameras and trying not to sneeze, pointed. “I think we’re gonna have to deal with that dog. It’s coming closer.” Before Tony could react, Bobby cursed under his breath and muttered, “Fine. I’ll handle it.” Then, as if things couldn’t get worse, the alarm system flared back to life. This time, it wasn’t just the vault. It was the whole damn casino. “GO!” Tony shouted. “MOVE, MOVE, MOVE!” And with that, the disaster was officially in full swing.
