secrets beneath the dungeon

1550 Words
The moon hung high above Ashwood, casting a pale silver glow over the quiet village. From the outside, everything seemed peaceful. The evening fires had burned low, the warriors had returned to their posts, and the frightened villagers had locked themselves inside their homes after the shocking events at the Sacred Valley. But Lyria knew peace was only an illusion. She sat beside the small window in Elder Rowan's cottage, unable to sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the Moon Stone shattering into countless glowing fragments. She remembered the fear in the villagers' eyes... and Adrian surrendering without resistance. Most of all, she remembered the words he had whispered as he passed her. Trust no one. A quiet knock broke the silence. Elder Rowan entered the room carrying two steaming cups of herbal tea. His tired eyes softened when he saw her still awake. "I thought you'd be asleep by now," he said gently. Lyria accepted the cup with a faint smile, but she didn't drink it. For a long moment, silence filled the room. Finally, Rowan sighed. "I know today has been difficult." Lyria lowered her eyes. "That's not what hurts." He looked at her patiently. "What hurts," she whispered, "is feeling like everyone knows something about me except me." Rowan's expression stiffened. She met his eyes. "When Adrian appeared... you looked terrified. So did Alpha Darius." She swallowed hard. "What aren't you telling me?" The old healer remained silent. His silence hurt more than any answer could have. "I knew it," she said bitterly. "You do know the truth." "Lyria..." "I trusted you." Her voice trembled. "You raised me. I thought if anyone would tell me the truth, it would be you." She placed the untouched tea on the table and walked toward the door. "Lyria." She stopped but didn't turn around. "I only wanted to protect you," Elder Rowan said quietly. A sad smile touched her lips. "Maybe I'm tired of being protected." She stepped outside, leaving the old healer alone. After the door closed, Rowan lowered his head. "Forgive me," he whispered to the empty room. "I promised your mother." Outside, the cool night breeze brushed against Lyria's face as she wandered through the silent streets. Curtains shifted as frightened villagers secretly watched her from their windows. For the first time in her life, Ashwood no longer felt like home. Her steps slowed when she reached the center of the village. Her eyes drifted toward the Alpha's lodge. Beneath it lay the underground prison. Adrian was there. He was the only person who hadn't looked at her with fear. The only one who seemed willing to tell her the truth. She shook her head. "He is a vampire," she reminded herself. Every lesson she had ever learned warned her never to trust one. Yet he had surrendered peacefully. He had endured silver chains without complaint. And when everyone else saw a curse... He had seen her. Lyria took a slow breath. "I deserve answers." The village bell rang midnight. One by one, the last lanterns went dark. Pulling her hood over her head, she slipped through the shadows toward the Alpha's lodge. Two warriors stood guard outside the prison entrance. "There hasn't been a sound from the vampire," one muttered. "The silver chains are enough to keep him weak," the other replied. "The Alpha ordered that no one enters." Lyria frowned. How was she supposed to get inside? Before she could think of a plan, a loud crash echoed from the eastern side of the village. The guards immediately reached for their weapons. "What was that?" Another crash followed, louder than the first. "Come on!" one guard shouted. "Let's check it out." The two warriors hurried toward the disturbance, leaving the entrance unguarded. Lyria didn't waste the opportunity. She slipped through the heavy wooden door and quietly descended the winding stone staircase. The deeper she went, the colder the air became. Water dripped steadily from the ceiling, its echo filling the narrow passage lined with empty prison cells. At the end of the corridor, a single lantern flickered. Inside the last cell sat Adrian. Silver chains bound his wrists to the stone wall, their touch leaving angry burns across his skin. His head rested against the wall, dark hair hiding part of his face. For a moment, Lyria simply watched him. He looked nothing like the monster the stories had described. Taking a cautious step forward, she accidentally scraped her shoe against the stone floor. The sound echoed through the corridor. Without opening his eyes, Adrian spoke. "I was beginning to think you wouldn't come." Lyria froze. "You... knew I was here?" A faint smile appeared on his lips as he slowly lifted his head. His crimson eyes met hers through the iron bars. "I hoped you would." He studied her quietly before speaking again. "They've been hiding the truth from you for a very long time... haven't they?" Lyria tightened her grip on the cold iron bars. "I came because I need answers." Adrian nodded slowly. "Then ask." She looked into his crimson eyes, her voice barely above a whisper. "Who... am I?" Adrian held Lyria's gaze for a long moment before speaking. "What did Elder Rowan tell you about your parents?" Lyria hesitated. "Only that my mother died giving birth to me... and that no one knew who my father was." A shadow crossed Adrian's face. "That isn't the whole truth." Lyria's fingers tightened around the iron bars. "Then tell me." "Your mother didn't die because she gave birth," he said quietly. "She died protecting you." Her breath caught. "Protecting me... from what?" "From those who feared what you would become." She shook her head. "No... you're lying." "I wish I were." Adrian stepped closer despite the silver chains burning his wrists. "The night you were born, your mother fled into Blackwood Forest with you in her arms. She knew people were hunting you, so she entrusted you to one man." "Elder rowan?" Lyria whispered. Adrian nodded. "He promised to keep you safe. Darius helped him keep that promise, but no secret remains hidden forever." Tears welled in Lyria's eyes. "Who am I?" Before Adrian could answer, heavy footsteps echoed down the stone staircase. His expression hardened. "Hide. Now." Lyria hurried behind a thick stone pillar just as the dungeon door swung open. Alpha Darius descended the stairs carrying a lantern. His tired gaze settled on Adrian. "You've been quiet," the Alpha said. "I've had nothing to say," Adrian replied calmly. Darius studied him for a moment. "You said they were coming." "I did." "Who are they?" Adrian's crimson eyes darkened. "The Shadowborn." The name drained the color from Darius's face."They've awakened?" "They've waited centuries for the Moon Stone to break. Now nothing stands in their way." Silence filled the dungeon. Darius lowered his eyes. "The night Rowan brought her back to Ashwood, he told me only enough to understand the danger." "He made me swear that no one would ever learn the girl's true identity." Adrian's gaze hardened. "The promise was Rowan's to make... and yours to keep." Hidden behind the pillar, Lyria covered her mouth to keep from gasping. "You should have told her," Adrian said. "we wanted her to have a normal life." "And now?" Darius lowered his head. "Now... she deserves the truth." Before Adrian could respond, a long, chilling howl echoed across the village. Another followed. Then another. Darius looked toward the ceiling. "They're here." A deafening explosion shook the dungeon. Dust fell from the cracked ceiling as the village alarm horn echoed through Ashwood. "The eastern wall!" Darius muttered. He turned toward the stairs. "Stay where you are," he ordered Adrian before rushing out of the prison. The heavy door slammed shut. For several seconds, only the distant sounds of battle remained. "You can come out," Adrian said softly. Lyria stepped from behind the pillar, her face pale. "Everything he said..." "It was true." "My mother really died protecting me?" Adrian nodded. "She gave her life so you could have yours." Another explosion rocked the prison. The clash of steel and desperate howls echoed from above. Lyria looked toward the staircase. "They need help." "They do." She turned back to Adrian. "But you're trapped." He glanced at the silver chains around his wrists."If I break these by force, your people will believe I betrayed them." "They already don't trust you." "Trust is earned." Before Lyria could answer, hurried footsteps thundered down the stairs. Captain Ronan burst into the dungeon, his armor stained with blood. His eyes widened when he saw Lyria. "Lady Lyria? What are you doing here?" She lowered her head, unable to answer. "There isn't time," Ronan said. "The eastern gate has fallen. Whatever is attacking us isn't wolf or vampire." He turned toward Adrian. "The Alpha has ordered that you be brought before the council." Ronan hesitated before adding, "The chains stay on." Adrian slowly rose to his feet, ignoring the pain from the silver shackles. His crimson eyes met Lyria's one last time. "The truth can no longer remain buried," he said quietly. He took a step toward the cell door as another explosion shook the village. "The real battle..." A faint, determined smile crossed his face. "...is about to begin."
