Just as they were almost there, James broke the silence. “People go to these charity events for their own agendas. I won’t be able to stay beside you the whole time. Just stay sharp, and if anything goes off, come find me right away.”

Honestly, Maria thought the whole "charity gala" label was a joke. Most of the guests were business big shots throwing pocket change at charity while making their millions off the masses—how generous.
When they arrived, James once again opened the door for her and offered his hand, all polite and smooth.
They walked in together and barely made it through the entrance before running into someone James knew.
“Mr. Bennett! Wow, long time no see!” The man’s eyes immediately drifted to Maria. “And this is…?”
