  In the office, the principal waved for James and the teacher to sit down while he pulled up some records.   Most files were digital these days, so it didn’t take long. He found the one he needed and beckoned them over. “Got it.”   James moved over quickly, anxiety written all over his face. His fingers clenched the hem of his coat subconsciously.   He didn’t know what to hope for anymore—   If the kid had nothing to do with him, then everything he’d been feeling was for nothing.   But if he really was his son... then Maria had probably blocked him out of her life for a reason. Those five years—what had she gone through?   On the screen, a table showed the basic info: Ella’s full name and her twin brother Ethan. Mother: Maria Lewis. Father: blank.   So Maria really had two kids.
