John sat with Pablito at the kitchen table. His phone buzzed. He looked at the message displayed on the screen. It was from Marcela.
Secondary target has left nest.
Will disable switch.
John was surprised she hadn’t eliminated Juan. His concern mounted and he punched a quick response.
Secondary target status?
The reply was instant:
Unstable — threat to primary target.
Intentional.
She must have worked Juan after all. He allowed himself a grim smile as he typed out his response.
Confirming all.
En route to birdfeeder with primary.
He hit send.
“I’ll be right back, Pablito. Keep working on those animals!”
Pablito didn’t look up from his dot-to-dot book. He redoubled his effort at John’s words, a tongue sticking out a corner of his mouth expressing his tough work.
