There are four ways to tell your mate from anyone else:
1. Sight - you'll never find anyone any more captivating and beautiful.
2. Hearing - Their voice is entrancing, like a spell.
3. Smell - their scent is bewitching, intoxicating to you and only you.
4. Touch - the slightest brush of skin will ignite your entire body like fireworks.
At least that's what I heard. After we found refuge in Sky View Pack from Luminescent Moon, my old pack, I've done everything I could to hide. To keep from finding my mate, I did everything possible to block the senses from my presence. It would all be perfect if I could just stay in the background and move like a ghost, but I couldn't even have that because, sadly, the petite height of five feet and four inches doesn't exactly make others run for the hills in terror, and that's why I'm always stuck in crappy situations like these...
I had my back against the lockers. I lifted my hood slightly just enough so that I could see the two opponents of mine while keeping my face hidden from anyone else. They were six-foot tall monsters with big beefy arms. Werewolves like these two annoyed me. They loved to show-off their arms and well-built chest like it's something they worked for when it was just their wolf genes. Unless they're training hard for those muscles, they can come back down from the altar the human fangirls have put them on. She-wolves like me don't have the strong, big body most wolves have. We're born small and lean, so we could move fast. I narrowed my eyes at the two waiting for them to make their first move.
"Did you have a nice trip?" One asked as he put his hand on the locker right beside me so he could lean closer as the other laughed. It didn't take me long to connect what trip he was talking about. These two were the ones who pushed me down the stairs earlier. I grabbed my white board and quickly began to sprawl down what I wanted to say. Honestly, I had a test, and they were making me late. I did not study all those stupid formulas to fail.
"Is that all you want to know?" The other read the message on my board, "Because unlike you idiots, I actually go to class and learn something." They both looked at me smirking.
"And if we don't let you go?" He replied.
"Maybe, we want to keep messing with you," the other finished placing his hand on my other side. I rolled my eyes in annoyance. I was done. If all they were going to do was talk, then they were wasting my time. I turned away grabbing my backpack off the floor, slipping my white board back in its place in my bag.
As I ducked under an arm ready to walk off, a hand immediately clasped around my arm tightly stopping me and pulling me back. I frowned and as I turned, I swung my fist making an impact with the wrong guy's face. I hear the sick crunch as his nose breaks against my fist. He fell back and as the guy that still held my arm pulled me toward him, I repeated the assault on him until he fell on his butt and he released his grip. His buddy reacted fast and came at me, but I quickly dodged his arms and tripped him, making him tumble into the lockers. He quickly turned around annoyed and came at me again. I dodged each fist he threw at me knowing that it only took one hit for me to lose. Werewolf strength wasn't something to underestimate. I managed to catch his wrist and pulled him toward me, kneeing him in the stomach. I punched him square in the jaw before shoving him to the side of me right into someone else.
"Hector, what the hell-" The guy started as he caught the guy I basically threw at him. My body froze in place as my ears vibrated with the alluring sound of his voice. A flame ignited beneath my skin sending a wave of heat from the top of my head down to the tips of my toes. I couldn't stop staring at the handsome guy standing in front of me. His dark brown hair was short. He had amazing blue eyes. His face consumed with worry and annoyance of the boy in front of him. Something was vibrating inside me. It was like every cell in my body was pounding against my skin. He was talking to this Hector guy, but my heartbeat pounding loudly in my ear drowned out his voice. What's happening to me? I shifted my gaze as he turned my way trying to keep my face hidden.
'You found him...' Aleu, my wolf's voice suddenly crossed my mind.
'What?' I said confused.
'You found him,' Aleu sighed relieved. 'Our mate, you found our mate!' Cold, dreading chills extinguished the heat and I lost the ability to breathe.
'O-our m-mate?' I said, frowning. No. No way. This can't be. I couldn't have found him. There was no way. I was suddenly ripped from my thoughts when I felt something coming for me. I snapped from my thoughts and clasped onto the wrist of the hand coming toward me and my hoodie. I kept my face toward the ground, but immediately at contact, I felt pleasurable sparks fly up my nerves from my palm. I quickly released his hand as if he burned me. Out of all the days to lose my gloves! What do I do? Knock him out and hope he develops amnesia? Do I run? What'll stop him from chasing me?
In the middle of my panic, I didn't notice the other guy behind me until he grabbed a handful of my hood and hair and pulled me back into him. My eyes widened as I made eye contact with the supposed mate of mine. Amazing blue eyes widening in realization as they locked on to my grey ones. s**t! I panicked and elbowed the guy clutching onto me in the stomach before turning to punch him another time in the face, making him release me. I quickly grabbed my things and ran down the hall.
"Hey, wait!" I heard my supposed mate call after me. His heavy footsteps echoed behind me as I raced to get away. I needed to find a place where my scent would be overpowered. An awful smell wafted through my nose and that's when I saw the male's room. Oh, Goddess. I quickly pinched my nose before entering the place. I quickly put my hood over my head as I found my way through the place. I kept my gaze down ignoring the hooting and hollering coming from the boys. I saw a jacket sitting on the bench. I quickly snagged it as discreetly as possible as I passed a lot of half-naked men. I also snagged a shirt and some sweatpants. I found my way to the opposite end of the boy's locker room, where the bathrooms and the showers were. I kept my face down as I passed the showering males. I covered my face as I felt some playfully splash me and goof around. I sighed in relief when I finally found an empty stall. I quickly locked it. I felt like throwing up as my lungs forced me to breathe the repugnant air. I changed into the clothes I snagged only keeping my underwear and bra. I packed my clothes in my backpack and left it hanging on the stall. I couldn't take it with me. It contained my scent.
"Are you sure she came in here?" I heard a very familiar voice ask.
"Yeah, I swear Daniel, it was her," I heard a voice say as I began to walk passed them. "She came in." The immediate smell of the sea filled the air around me as he walked passed me making me stop in my tracks for a moment. I felt a sense of nostalgia and I could almost hear the waves crashing against the shore, the gentle breeze, and the sound of the birds. It was amazing. I was about to relax when a voice spoke up.
"I smell her," I heard my mate say snapping me from my thoughts and snapping my panic into gear as I rushed down the aisle to get out of there before they found my backpack. I was so glad it worked. The clothes contained the stench of their owners just enough to block my scent from them.
I walked down the hall trying to get as far away as possible. I can't believe I found him. I wasn't supposed to find him. I wore hoodies no matter how hot it was, so he or I would never see each other. I kept my space with everyone so that my scent would not be distinguishable against everyone else's and wore scented garbage in case they got too close. I made sure that, unless beating someone up, my hands were kept to myself. I pretend to be mute so my voice wouldn't draw anyone's attention. Like honestly! Why couldn't the Moon Goddess just this once give me a freaking break?! We can't stay here anymore. We had to go. This place is no longer safe for us. There was a heavy pressure on my chest making it a bit hard to breathe the farther I seemed to get from the boys' locker room. I found the janitor's closet and I went in. I needed to calm down and think about what to do next. The smell of chemicals was strong in the janitor's closet, but I ignored it as I tried to clear my head. The smell would do in case he happened to know what my new scent was. I honestly never imagined my mate would be in this small town. Out of the entire world, why the hell here? Why did he have to be here? I held my head in my hands. Okay, now is not the time. I'll have to get mom to want to leave. There must be a way.
"Yo, you find her?" I heard an unfamiliar voice say.
"Does it look like I have?" An irritated voice that sent shivers through me replied. Oh God, he's right outside. I focused on taking deep breaths trying to keep my heart beat at a normal rate as I began playing with the mop and the mop bucket. I know he could hear me. I know they all could. So, the only way to keep them from coming in here is if I pretend to be the janitor.
"You don't have to be so tense," The other unknown voice mumbled.
"She left her things in the boys' locker room," I finally recognized Daniel's voice, the future Beta of this pack. He and I were somewhat close. It all started when I beat him up for trying to take off my hood. Afterward, he kind of just started hanging out with Jase, my human best friend, and me. "I'm telling you, Eric. If Kat doesn't want to be found, you're not going to find her." I frowned annoyed. Not so sure about that. This is the second time he's found me without even realizing. What the hell...
"Is that her name?" I heard the other voice ask.
"Yeah, it's the rogue she-wolf staying here with the permission of Alpha Andrew," Daniel replied.
"No way..." The other voice said in disbelief, "not her, dude..."
"What's your problem with her, anyway?" I heard my mate getting defensive.
"What do you mean what?" The other voice said, "she's a rogue and you're future Alpha." My eyes widened as my panic began to raise the speed of my heart and my hand stopped moving the mop. Oh no. Not an Alpha. Why an Alpha? He's Mr. Andrew's son?! I felt my stomach flop uneasily. What kind of twisted game is the Moon Goddess playing? "How do you think your parents or the pack are going to react to the future Luna?"
"They're going to have to deal," Eric, my mate, replied, "and I want you to find out who started that fight between her and Hector."
"And if it was my cousin?" Derek asked.
"If he was messing with Cassie, what would you do?" Eric replied. He didn't give a response. "Exactly."
"It's different, he didn't know," Derek argued.
"Yeah, well, all I'm going to do is let him know," Eric replied.
When they finally left, I took a moment to breathe and calm down in the closet before I snuck out of school and headed straight home. I burst through the door and immediately went up to my room. I began packing a few sets of clothes, sleeping bags, my savings. I went to Krissy, my younger sister's room, and began packing her things as well. As soon as mom and Kris came home, we would head out. We couldn't stay here.
No matter how much my head revolved around what I had discovered today, I couldn't accept the reality of what had happened. My mate is an Alpha, the most powerful kind of werewolf. The kind that ruled over the packs of wolves living under their territory. How could an Alpha be mated to a Rogue, an outsider, no, trespasser to the pack? It's just not possible. I couldn't be future Luna, female Alpha. I'm not a leader. I'm just a she-wolf protecting her family from the monsters chasing us. Sky View was a nice break while it lasted, but safety had immediately dissolved from here when I locked eyes with those ocean, beautiful ocean, blue eyes of his.
I heard a car approaching the house from the dirt road leading to our house and I immediately shoved the last thing in the bag before I rushed downstairs. I stood in front of the door waiting for mom to get out of the car and enter the house. Mom jumped startled, taking a step back when she found me standing there. Her facial expression went from startled to an indifferent, stoic one as a frown permeated it and looked away from me.
"Mom, we have to talk," I said as I heard the car in front leaving and Mom shut the door. It was probably Mrs. Carla, the current Luna of Sky View, my apparent mate's mother. Ugh, why does it still seem unreal? I can't believe this.
"I think I'm going to rest," She replied quietly before going up the stairs.
"No, you have to pack your things," I shouted.
"Pack?!" Mom said startled. "I'm not packing! I'm not leaving!"
"We have to," I argued, "we're no longer safe here." With my mate here, everything changes. It's even worse that he's an alpha. We had to go.
"Why not?" Mom asked.
"Because-" I started. I couldn't exactly tell mom my mate made it impossible for us to stay. She wouldn't find that as a reason to leave. No, she'd think we should stay like if she weren't living proof of why mates are the worst curse the Moon Goddess had gifted us with. "Because Mr. Andrew finally decided to kick us out of his territory."
"Carla didn't tell-" She started.
"Because I asked her not too!" I argued, "I wanted to break it to you myself. Once Krissy gets home, we are leaving."
"I am not leaving unless Andrew or Carla come tell me that themselves!" Mom argued walking up the steps. I chased after her trying to convince her.
"Where is he?!" I heard a familiar voice shout. I turned at the top of the stairs looking at Aleu, in her wolf pup form looking around frantically. "Where's our mate?!"
"What are you doing here?!" I shouted at her as I began to go down the stairs. "You're supposed to be with Krissy!"
"She's fine!" She argued. "Where is our mate?!"
Aleu and I were different from ordinary wolves. There was only a limited amount of time that we could share a body. It was an annoying limitation, but one Aleu and I had to bear. Why were we different? I didn't really know. It was something we've had to deal with since I first shifted at the age of thirteen.
"Go back with Krissy!" I shouted.
"Not a chance!" She replied, "Not until I see our mate!" The sound of an engine coming toward the house was heard from outside. I went out of the house as the bus came to a stop. The doors opened and I watched as Krissy came running out. I kneeled to the ground and scooped my baby sister up into my arms.
Although she was six, she was short for her age. I constantly worried that the malnutrition she suffered through in the beginning of her life was what stunted her growth slightly.
"Mommy!" She said smiling, "guess what I did in school today!"
"What?" I asked as I waved to Mrs. Kerri, the bus driver. Although Krissy was my sister, she grew a habit of calling me mommy after she went to school. I corrected her when I could, but it was becoming so often that it'd slip through a few times. Krissy pulled away enough to look me in the face and smile brightly as she pushed strands of hair out of my face. Krissy began to tell me all about how she and her friend Emily did an art project together and what she had for lunch. I had to admit, after living here carefree for two years, I worried about dragging Krissy back into that life. Mr. Andrew, the Alpha of Sky View, made it so easy for us here.
There were only two rules I had to follow to stay in Sky View:
1. Stay out of the Pack's way.
2. Do what I have to do to keep the suspicion of my presence here from Luminescent Moon.
Sky View always was one thing: A Temporary Sanctuary and I think Krissy's smiling face every day made me easily forget, but finding my mate, the Future Alpha, made it clear: our time was up and it was time to go.
