KINGDOM OF FIRE

1849 Words
The roar of flames echoed across the Valley of Embers. Blazing pillars of fire erupted from cracks in the volcanic ground as dozens of young warriors clashed in the Inferno Pack's largest training arena. Sparks filled the air with every strike, while rivers of molten lava flowed harmlessly around the massive black stone battlefield. The heat was unbearable for outsiders. For the wolves of the Inferno Pack... It felt like home. "Again!" Captain Darius roared as he lunged forward, his entire body engulfed in crimson flames. The young warriors immediately retreated. All except one. A tall young man stood calmly at the center of the arena, his molten-gold eyes fixed on the approaching captain. His jet-black hair swayed gently in the rising heat, and a faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips. Crown Prince Draven Ashfang. At only twenty-three years old, he was already considered the strongest warrior of his generation. Darius' flaming sword descended like a meteor. Draven didn't move. The watching warriors held their breath. At the last possible second... He sidestepped effortlessly. The blade struck the stone, sending molten rock flying into the air. Before Darius could recover, Draven twisted gracefully behind him. His palm glowed bright crimson. A controlled burst of fire exploded from his hand. BOOM! The captain was thrown several feet backward before skidding across the volcanic rock. Silence. The young warriors stared in disbelief. Darius slowly climbed to his feet before throwing back his head and laughing. "I surrender." The crowd erupted into cheers. "Prince Draven!" "Future Alpha!" "No one can defeat him!" Draven smiled awkwardly before helping the older warrior stand. "You nearly had me." Darius laughed louder. "Your humility will make you a greater Alpha than your strength ever could." Before Draven could reply... A deep voice echoed across the arena. "Compliments should be earned after training is finished." Every warrior instantly straightened. The cheers vanished. Alpha King Kael Ashfang had arrived. Standing nearly six and a half feet tall, Kael radiated overwhelming authority. His crimson-trimmed black cloak fluttered behind him as though alive. Molten-gold eyes swept across the arena, making even veteran warriors instinctively lower their heads. Beside him walked Luna Seraphina. Unlike Kael's commanding presence, serenity surrounded her. Her silver-blue gown flowed gracefully despite the scorching heat. Wherever she stepped, the air seemed calmer, and even the youngest wolves smiled upon seeing their beloved Luna. "My King." Every warrior bowed. Kael nodded once. "You've all improved." His gaze settled upon Draven. "But improvement is the enemy of perfection." Draven lowered his head respectfully. "I understand, Father." Without another word, Kael stepped into the center of the arena. "Fight me." Every warrior's eyes widened. Even Captain Darius couldn't hide his excitement. Draven blinked. "Here?" Kael folded his arms. "Or has the future Alpha grown afraid?" A grin spread across Draven's face. "I was hoping you would ask." Within seconds both men had shifted. Massive wolves now stood facing each other. Gasps echoed throughout the arena. Kael's wolf towered over everyone. His midnight-black fur shimmered like polished obsidian, while glowing crimson markings flowed across his body like rivers of molten lava. Every breath released waves of heat powerful enough to make nearby stones glow red. Draven's wolf looked equally magnificent. Though slightly smaller than his father's, he possessed the same black coat adorned with brilliant crimson markings. His golden eyes burned with determination. Father and son circled one another. Neither attacked. Neither blinked. The tension became unbearable. Then... They vanished. Two black blurs collided. Fire exploded into the sky. The ground shook beneath the force of their clash. Draven lunged first. Kael met him head-on. Their flaming claws struck each other with deafening force. Boom! Shockwaves swept across the arena. Young warriors stumbled backward. Captain Darius raised a wall of fire to shield them from the intense heat. Kael attacked again. His movements were precise. Experienced. Every strike carried decades of battlefield wisdom. Draven answered each attack with remarkable speed. For several minutes neither wolf gained an advantage. The spectators watched in stunned silence. "He keeps up with the Alpha..." "Impossible..." "I've never seen anyone last this long." Even Seraphina smiled proudly. "My son has grown stronger." Finally... Kael leaped backward. His body became surrounded by brilliant golden flames. The entire arena trembled. Captain Darius' expression changed instantly. "Solar Flame..." Every warrior's heartbeat quickened. Only the Alpha King possessed that legendary ability. Ordinary fire burned red. Solar Flame burned gold. It was said that nothing could withstand its heat. Kael opened his jaws. Golden fire gathered before him. The air itself seemed to melt. Draven immediately understood. Father wasn't testing his strength. He was testing his judgment. Instead of answering with more power... Draven lowered his head. He shifted back into his human form and smiled. "I lose." For a brief moment... Complete silence filled the arena. Then Kael's golden flames disappeared. He shifted back as well. A rare smile crossed the Alpha King's face. "You finally understand." The warriors exchanged confused glances. Draven looked toward the younger fighters gathered around the arena. "If I had answered Father's Solar Flame with all my strength..." "The explosion would have injured everyone standing here." Kael nodded approvingly. "A true Alpha knows when to fight." "And more importantly..." "When not to." The entire arena erupted into applause. Captain Darius laughed proudly. "Our future Alpha has learned the greatest lesson of all." Kael rested a hand upon Draven's shoulder. "Strength earns victories." "Wisdom earns kingdoms." Before Draven could answer... A cheerful voice echoed from the arena entrance. "Brother!" Everyone turned. Two young wolves raced toward the training grounds, arguing so loudly that half the warriors couldn't help laughing. Prince Ryker Ashfang. Princess Lyra Ashfang. The royal twins had arrived. And wherever the twins appeared... Peace rarely lasted for long. Brother!" Before Draven could react, a streak of copper-red shot across the training grounds. Prince Ryker Ashfang shifted into his human form mid-run and threw an arm around Draven's shoulders with his usual carefree grin. "I knew you would lose eventually." Draven raised an eyebrow. "I did?" Ryker nodded confidently. "Of course. Father is ancient." The entire arena fell silent. Captain Darius slowly covered his face. Several warriors took an instinctive step backward. Kael looked at his youngest son without a word. Ryker finally noticed the dangerous silence surrounding him. "...Did I say something wrong?" A burst of laughter echoed through the arena. Even Kael couldn't suppress a faint smile. "You may run twenty laps around the Valley of Embers after lunch." Ryker groaned dramatically. "I was complimenting your experience!" "Forty." "Father!" "Fifty." The warriors erupted into laughter while Ryker sighed in defeat. "I should have stayed in wolf form." A soft chuckle drifted across the arena. Princess Lyra Ashfang approached her brothers with graceful steps, carrying a small crystal flask filled with glowing blue water. Unlike the rest of her family, there was nothing fiery about her appearance. Her silver-white hair shimmered beneath the sunlight, while sapphire-blue eyes reflected the calmness of a mountain lake. She had inherited her mother's Water element. Many outsiders considered that strange. The Inferno Pack never had. To them, Lyra was living proof that the Moon Goddess herself chose each pup's blessing. She smiled warmly at Draven. "You burned your hand again." Draven glanced at his palm. A small burn had escaped everyone's attention except his sister's. "It will heal." Lyra shook her head. "You always say that." She gently poured a few drops of glowing water onto the wound. A gentle blue light surrounded Draven's hand. Within seconds... The burn disappeared completely. The younger warriors watched in amazement. "No matter how many times I see Luna Lyra heal someone..." "It still feels like magic." Lyra smiled shyly. "It isn't magic." "It is simply the Moon Goddess's blessing." Kael looked proudly at his children. "Fire gives us strength." "Water teaches us compassion." "A true ruler needs both." The family began walking back toward the royal palace. The path wound through the heart of the Inferno Pack. Towering volcanic peaks surrounded the kingdom, while glowing rivers of lava flowed peacefully beside stone roads. Crimson trees stretched toward the sky, their ember-like leaves illuminating the forest even during the night. Children chased one another across warm black stone bridges. Blacksmiths forged weapons using molten lava drawn directly from underground rivers. Farmers cultivated rare flame blossoms whose seeds could survive only in volcanic soil. Everywhere they walked, pack members bowed respectfully. Not because they feared the royal family... But because they loved them. Draven greeted elderly wolves by name. Ryker stopped to help a young pup whose basket of fire berries had fallen. Lyra paused to heal an injured hawk before releasing it back into the sky. Kael watched his children quietly. Seraphina noticed the small smile on her mate's face. "You look proud." "I am." "They will protect this pack long after we are gone." She gently slipped her hand into his. "They learned that from you." Kael shook his head. "They learned it from us." Soon the royal family reached Ashfang Keep, the largest castle among all four packs. It had been carved directly into the side of an ancient volcano. Black volcanic stone formed its walls, while rivers of glowing lava flowed beneath crystal bridges surrounding the fortress. Massive crimson banners bearing the Ashfang crest fluttered in the warm wind. Inside, the Great Hall buzzed with activity. Generals discussed border patrols. Elders debated ancient traditions. Messengers arrived from neighboring territories. The Inferno Pack never truly rested. As the royal family took their seats for the midday meal, Seraphina noticed Lyra staring thoughtfully out of the window. "What troubles you, my little flame?" Lyra smiled faintly. "The moon." Ryker looked confused. "The moon? It's daytime." "I know." "But ever since last night's gathering..." "It feels different." Draven looked toward the bright sky. The moon was invisible beneath the afternoon sunlight. Yet... For reasons he couldn't explain... He felt it too. A strange pull. As though someone was silently calling from very far away. Before anyone could speak further— BOOM! The heavy doors of the Great Hall burst open. A royal messenger stumbled inside, covered in ash and breathing heavily. He dropped to one knee. "My King!" Kael immediately rose. "What happened?" "The Eternal Flame..." Every Elder inside the hall froze. The Eternal Flame had burned within the Temple of Fire since the founding of the Inferno Pack. According to legend, it had never weakened. Never changed. Never gone out. The messenger swallowed hard. "It... changed color." Silence. Kael's expression darkened. "What color?" The young messenger's voice trembled. "...Silver." For the first time in centuries... Fear flickered across the face of the Alpha King. Without another word, Kael turned toward the temple. The entire royal family followed. None of them noticed the unease in Draven's heart. Nor did they know that, far beyond the borders of the Inferno Pack, the same mysterious signs were beginning to appear in the lands of the other three great packs. Somewhere beneath the same moon... Destiny was quietly weaving their futures together.
