The battle exploded into chaos all around them. Wolves snarled and crashed into each other. The sounds of fighting filled the night air. Elara moved on pure instinct, her silver dagger flashing under the moonlight. Shadows whipped out from her hands like living things, tearing into anyone who came too close. The power felt both good and terrifying. It made her blood sing, but it also scared her.
Rafe stayed right beside her, fighting with fierce strength. Their movements matched without words, like they had done this together many times before. Every time their eyes met through the blood and noise, a fierce warmth bloomed in her chest. It gave her strength even as claws and teeth flashed everywhere.
Kael charged straight at her in his massive black wolf form. His eyes burned with pure hate. “You should have died that night in the mud!” he snarled as their bodies collided.
The fight was brutal and ugly. His claws raked across her side, sending hot blood running down her ribs. Pain burned white-hot through her body, making her gasp. She pushed through it, swinging her dagger and calling on the shadows to strike back. Every hit she landed made Kael roar louder. Years of pain, loneliness, and anger poured out of her with every strike. She thought about her mother dying slowly. She thought about all the cold nights alone. She thought about the father who never wanted her. All of it fueled her.
Then an enforcer lunged at her from behind. Before she could turn, Rafe took the savage bite meant for her. He cried out in pain and crumpled to the ground, blood pouring from his shoulder. The sight broke something inside Elara. A raw, painful scream tore from her throat. Power exploded outward from her in a wave — bright silver light mixed with devouring darkness crashing over Kael like a storm.
Ghostly figures shimmered into being around them. Kael’s murdered brother and the witch appeared, their eyes full of silent accusation. The pack fighters froze, staring in shock and fear.
Elara stood over her fallen father, dagger raised high above her head. Her arm trembled. Tears blurred her vision and ran down her dirty, blood-streaked face. Her chest heaved with every painful breath. Rafe’s weak voice reached her from the ground. “Elara… don’t…”
Kael looked up at her, breathing hard. His voice came out hoarse and strained. “Kill me… and the curse becomes fully yours. You’ll be no different than the monster you hate.”
Her fingers gripped the dagger hilt so tight her knuckles turned white. The weight of everything pressed down on her — her mother’s suffering, the banishment, the years of pain. Part of her wanted to end it right there. To make him feel everything she had felt. But another part, the part that still hoped she could be better than him, made her hesitate.
The entire pack stood in heavy silence, watching to see what the banished daughter would choose. Some looked afraid of the shadows curling at her feet. Others looked hopeful, like they wanted a new future.
Just as Elara’s arm started to come down, another twist hit hard. One of the enforcers who had turned against Kael earlier stepped forward. His voice shook as he spoke. “Wait! There’s more you don’t know. Kael didn’t just kill his brother. He has another child — a secret son he hid even from the pack. And that son is fighting on his side right now.”
The words hit Elara like a punch to the gut. She froze, dagger still raised. Her eyes widened in shock. Rafe tried to push himself up, pain clear on his face. The pack began murmuring loudly, confusion spreading fast.
Kael let out a weak, cruel laugh from the ground. “Surprise, daughter. The family you hate is bigger than you thought.”
The shadows around Elara grew restless, responding to her shock and rising anger. The battle was far from over. More wolves were still fighting. The ground kept cracking open. The blood moon hung high above them, watching everything like a silent judge.
Elara’s mind raced. A secret brother? Another child her father had hidden? The thought made her feel sick. How many more secrets did Kael have? How many more lives had he ruined?
Rafe reached out weakly from the ground. “Elara… be careful,” he whispered. His voice was getting weaker. Blood kept flowing from his wound.
She looked down at her father again. The dagger felt heavy in her hand. Part of her still wanted to finish this. But if she killed him now, what would the curse do? Would it take her completely? Would she lose herself?
The pack was waiting. The shadows were waiting. The ghosts were waiting.
And somewhere in the fighting, her half-sister Lira was still out there.
Elara took a deep breath. Her hand shook as she made her choice.
She lowered the dagger.
But as she did, the ground shook violently. A new wave of shadows burst up from the cracks. This time they didn’t just attack Kael’s men. They turned toward Rafe too, wrapping around him like dark chains.
Kael laughed weakly. “You can’t escape it, girl. The curse always takes what it wants.”
Elara screamed his name as the shadows pulled harder. The battle around them grew louder. Her half-sister’s voice called out from somewhere in the chaos.
Everything was falling apart.
And the worst was yet to come.
