“I’m sorry, Cas. I didn’t mean to scare you. Just go put some clothes on while I fix us a coffee. I want to tell you what Gabriel said.”
Cassandra gave Lucas a small smile and retreated to the bedroom. She reappeared almost fully dressed within a couple of minutes. The only signs Cassandra and Axel had got up to anything at all were messed up hair and cheeks that were a little more flushed than they should be.
Cassandra's gaze still kept being subconsciously pulled back to the door like she was willing Axel to open it and run back to her.
“Cas,” Lucas indulged her. “He will be back, okay?”
Cassandra looked so lost without him and Lucas could only wonder what that felt like. The omega gave a doubtful nod and walked over to sit on the couch. Lucas had set down two cups on the window ledge. He passed one carefully to Cassandra after settling himself uncomfortably on the pillows.
“How much longer do you think Axel will be?” Cassandra asked, looking over her shoulder again. If Lucas hadn’t been so worried about what he was going to say to Axel when he got back, he might have been a bit more considerate with his response.
“I don’t know, never mind about Axel.” Lucas answered, picking up his own mug and curling his fingers around the sides to warm them up. He knew his choice of words couldn’t have distressed Cassandra more when her expression folded at the very idea his brother was low on Lucas’ list of priorities right now.
Cassandra couldn’t think of anything that was more important than Axel.
“I’m not doing very well here, am I?” Lucas groaned miserably. Cassandra didn’t answer. She seemed to be too intent on examining the dark mysteries of the contents of her coffee cup. Lucas could have cursed himself for letting his fractured emotions betray him like that. He had worked so hard to win Cassandra’s trust and had shattered it in an instant. It seemed like she was making a determined effort to avoid looking at him at all.
“Cas. I am sorry,” Lucas said, replacing the cup on the sill and edging towards her. “I’m just worried. I haven’t slept much, and I know Axel's really struggling with all this. We’ve got no money coming in and I want to support you both, I really do… but so much has happened lately. I just let everything get on top of me.”
Cassandra shrunk back against the edge of the seat, trying hard not to show Lucas how disturbed she was at having to witness such an unwarranted verbal assault on a man she had grown to trust implicitly. It left the inside of her body cold.
“I don’t think I’m the one you should be apologizing to, Lucas,” Cassandra said unsteadily. She had no desire to aggravate Lucas and earn his own mouthful of abuse.
Lucas drew his lips into a straight line, and sighed. “Yeah, I know.”
Cassandra drained her coffee in silence and stared down into the empty cup. She didn’t want to admit she was hurt that Axel still hadn't come back for her. Being pissed with Lucas was understandable, but Cassandra was just left standing there in another man’s clothes with a pulsing ache between her legs that had been left painfully untouched.
“How long has he been gone?” Cassandra asked suddenly. Lucas thought at first she was just trying to make conversation, but now he could see Cassandra was really jumpy and kept tapping her fingertips against the side of the cup, while her knee bobbed up and down with agitation.
“Two minutes since you last asked,” Lucas said patiently, but that didn’t really appease her in the slightest. Lucas thought it might be a good time to distract her by telling Cassandra about his clandestine meeting with Gabriel.
“So, I talked to your brother,” Cassandra looked up. Lucas had managed to secure her attention at least, but he knew he had to be careful about what he was going to say next. “It was more of a chance encounter than anything else, so please don’t think I was interfering. I don’t want to get my hopes up, but it seems he might be prepared to be a bit more understanding about you and Axel.” Cassandra seemed to brighten a bit at that and opened her mouth to respond, but she didn’t even manage to get one word out before she heard the door creak open.
Cassandra flicked her head round so quickly that she put her neck out. Axel glanced at Lucas when he reappeared, but the anger that had been carved into his face when he left seemed to have been replaced with something else. Cassandra jumped up and over the back of the couch before Axel was even through the door.
Lucas was left in the middle of the room with his mouth open when Cassandra rushed over to Axel and almost threw herself on top of him. She pushed up against him and fumbled for his hands. Cassandra lifted up one of Axel’s arms and lightly kissed each one of his fingertips in turn before pressing his hand to her mouth.
Axel just watched the seductive caress of her lips in silence at such an unexpected display of affection. He had only been gone twenty minutes.
The slow spread of a smile gradually curved up one side of her face, and the way Cassandra was looking up at Axel soon softened the grip around his heart. Axel wrapped his fingers tightly around Cassandra’s and held onto one of her hands while his other one slipped down Cassandra’s back. He curved it over her waist to tug her in and press their bodies together.
Cassandra reached up and pulled at his shirt as she making soft little whimpers of relief when she buried her face in Axel’s shoulder. Axel closed his eyes and breathed in the intoxicating scent of Cassandra’s hair while she shamelessly slinked up against him.
“I take it you missed me, then…” Axel whispered. Cassandra didn’t speak but Axel felt her offer a quick nod.
Axel saw Lucas watching them over Cassandra’s shoulder when he opened his eyes. He shyly rubbed one hand over the back of his neck, realizing what that must have looked like.
“Cas…” Axel murmured, nudging the omega gently with his hips as a hint they should maybe pick up where they left off later when they wouldn’t be so easily disturbed. He gave a nod towards his brother and bent his head to put his lips close to Cassandra’s ear. “Lucas…” Axel said quietly, carefully releasing his hold on her. They reluctantly pulled apart.
Axel knew Cassandra was almost ready to let herself be claimed. Just because Axel made a silent vow to himself to wait a little while longer, he was fairly sure that didn’t mean they couldn’t practice. Axel’s thoughts were constantly filled with the sweet promise of what was waiting for him when Cassandra decided to let him into her heart and body.
Sometimes those thoughts were filled with images of loving touches and the soft press of Cassandra’s plump lips against his own. Sometimes the darker ones crept in and swamped his senses. A forceful desire to bend her over and haul her up onto her knees to make love with her so hard she couldn’t even remember her own name.
Axel satisfied that need for now with those pictures in his head, and remained completely oblivious as to the real reason why Cassandra had responded so fiercely when he returned. It was merely a confirmation for Lucas of everything that had been flitting around in the back of his sleep-deprived mind since he closed the pages of Axel’s book a couple of days before.
Cassandra hovered next to him, but Axel refused to sit down while Lucas was studying him like he was a caged animal just waiting to strike. He was still really pissed at his brother, and part of him was scared Cassandra might actually start to believe it was only a matter of time before he would become that brutal monster who once shaped her dreams and forged her nightmares.
Axel kept hesitantly glancing over to her to make sure Cassandra still had the same tender expression that usually graced her soft features whenever she looked at her alpha.
Axel never felt insecure or anxious about anything in his life until the moment he first laid eyes on that perfect omega he longed to make his own. When he thought about what it would be like if he ever lost her, he wanted to hold her close and never let go… Axel sometimes imagined his heart would just stop beating.
