The glass doors of the diner rattled as they were pushed open. The chaotic, noisy atmosphere of the restaurant instantly vanished, replaced by a suffocating, heavy silence. It felt like the air pressure in the room had plummeted, making it difficult for anyone to draw a full breath.
Alex Blackthorn stepped through the doorway.
He had left his coat in the vehicle. He stood tall in his immaculate, dark tailored suit, his broad shoulders easily throwing a long shadow across the entire entrance. To the humans in the diner, he looked like a dangerous king who had just walked off the pages of a luxury magazine. But it was his aura that truly terrified them. A wave of raw, dominant authority rolled off him, so intense that several customers unconsciously lowered their heads, unable to look him in the eye.
Beside him stood Marcus, the Blackthorn Pack Gamma. Marcus’s sharp, warrior eyes scanned the room like a hawk, his hand resting casually near his jacket where his weapons were hidden.
Alex ignored everyone else. His intense, burning gaze locked onto the girl standing in the center of the room.
Luna.
The moment his eyes found her, his inner wolf let out a possessive roar that echoed in his skull. The scent of rain-soaked vanilla and ozone was overwhelming now, filling his senses and melting the ice around his ancient heart. He saw the stained apron, the pale skin, and then his eyes dropped to her hand.
A small bead of bright crimson blood was tracking down her index finger from the broken glass.
A dark, lethal growl almost escaped Alex's lips. The temperature in the diner seemed to drop to freezing. His wolf wanted to rip the building apart for allowing his mate to bleed. He took three slow, heavy steps forward, his expensive leather shoes clicking like a death countdown against the floor.
Chloe, completely unaware of who she was dealing with but recognizing a billionaire when she saw one, quickly smoothed down her wet jeans. She forced her most charming smile and stepped into Alex’s path. "Excuse me, sir... you shouldn't be in this section. This clumsy waitress just ruined the floor and splashed water everywhere. Let me help you find a better"
"Move," Alex murmured.
His voice wasn't loud, but it carried a terrifying, deep vibration that made Chloe’s smile instantly freeze. Her heart violently seized with an instinctual fear she couldn't understand. Her legs shook so badly she had to grab the edge of a booth just to stay standing. She scrambled backward, completely silenced.
Alex kept walking until he was standing directly in front of Luna. Up close, his massive frame completely blocked her from the rest of the world.
Luna looked up. And up.
Her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird, and the silver pendant around her neck was pulsing with a fierce, throbbing heat. She could feel the dangerous, heavy energy radiating from this man. She knew he was powerful, wealthy, and intimidating. Every person in the room was trembling because of him.
But Luna did not look down. She did not run away.
Instead, her nursing instincts the deep desire to help someone in pain instantly kicked in. She looked past his expensive suit and noticed the dark, heavy circles of exhaustion under his striking golden-hazel eyes. She noticed the slight tension in his jaw, the way his knuckles were white, and how his chest rose and fell in shallow, stressed breaths. To her, he didn't look like a god. He looked like a patient on the verge of a severe anxiety attack or physical collapse from extreme stress.
"You're bleeding," Alex said, his voice raw as he looked down at her small, sliced finger. He reached out a long, calloused hand, his fingers trembling slightly as he prepared to touch her.
"I'm fine, it's just a scratch," Luna said softly, her voice remarkably steady.
Before he could touch her, she noticed a dark stain on the cuff of his white button-down shirt. Her eyes widened slightly. It wasn't ink. Her medical training instantly recognized the metallic, rust-colored tint of dried blood.
"Wait," Luna said, completely ignoring her own injury. She reached into her apron pocket and pulled out a clean, wrapped antiseptic wipe and a small roll of medical tape she always carried for emergencies. "You're the one who needs help. You have blood on your sleeve. Are you hurt?"
Alex froze entirely. His golden eyes widened in absolute shock.
For three hundred years, humans had either trembled in fear before his dominant Alpha aura or tried to use him for his wealth. No one had ever looked at him with genuine, selfless concern. No one had ever ignored their own bleeding wound just to ask if he was hurt. And most importantly, she was looking directly into his eyes, completely unafraid of the apex predator standing before her.
"I am not hurt," Alex managed to say, his throat feeling incredibly dry as her small, soft fingers gently brushed against his wrist to inspect his sleeve.
The moment her skin touched his, a massive, blinding electric shock tore through both of their bodies. A gasp escaped Luna’s lips as a wave of intense, familiar warmth rushed straight to her heart. Alex’s wolf surged forward, scratching at his mind, begging him to wrap his arms around her and never let her go.
Confused and overwhelmed by the explosive physical reaction, Luna instinctively took a step back, her eyes wide as she looked at her hands. "What... what was that?" she whispered.
Alex stared at his hand where she had touched him, his mind spinning in a chaotic mix of confusion, possession, and a deep, protective instinct he hadn't felt in centuries. He realized that if he stayed in this room any longer, his wolf would lose control and claim her right in front of these humans. She wasn't ready for his world yet. She was too fragile.
"Marcus," Alex commanded, his voice tight as he forced himself to turn his back on her. "Handle the rest."
"Yes, Alpha King," Marcus murmured from the shadows.
Without another word, Alex strode out into the rainy dark, leaving Luna standing in the center of the diner, her bleeding finger forgotten as she stared at the doorway, her entire world permanently altered by a man whose name she didn't even know.
