The rain blurred the world around Alex Blackthorn, turning the city lights into soft shadows and hiding everything except the one thing his wolf had been searching for.
Her.
Alex walked through the storm with a calm expression, but inside, nothing felt calm. Shadow's presence pressed against his mind, stronger than it had been moments ago.
Closer.
Alex narrowed his eyes slightly. "You have never reacted like this before."
A low growl answered him.
Because I have never found her before.
The response should have been impossible.
A wolf did not choose lightly. The bond between a werewolf and their mate was not based only on appearance or attraction. It was something deeper, something that connected two souls.
But Alex had lived long enough to question everything.
And still, his own wolf was certain.
The scent grew stronger as he moved down the empty street. Beneath the smell of rain and wet pavement, there was something warm and familiar. Something that made Shadow feel strangely peaceful.
Then he saw her.
A young woman stood beneath the rain, holding a small paper bag close to her chest. Her clothes were soaked, her hair clung to her face, and her shoulders trembled slightly from the cold.
But she was not trying to protect herself.
She was protecting the bag.
Alex slowed his steps.
Most people in her situation would have searched for shelter first. They would have worried about their clothes, their comfort, their own safety.
But this girl was standing in the middle of a storm worrying about something else.
"Why?" Alex quietly wondered.
Why did she care so much about something so simple?
Luna did not notice him immediately. Her attention was focused on the small paper flower she had started folding from the corner of the receipt.
It was an old habit.
Whenever she felt nervous or overwhelmed, her fingers would automatically search for paper. Mrs. Grace had taught her how to make little flowers when she was a child, telling her that even something small could become beautiful with enough patience.
She had kept doing it ever since.
Tonight, however, her hands were too cold, and the paper kept slipping between her fingers.
She sighed softly.
"I hope everyone at the orphanage is okay..."
The quiet words reached Alex's ears.
His expression changed slightly.
She was worried about others.
Again.
Shadow became quieter.
Almost approving.
You see.
Alex ignored the comment, but he could not deny what he was seeing.
The girl was different.
Not because of some power.
Not because of the bond.
Because of who she was.
"Are you hurt?"
Alex's voice made Luna freeze.
She turned quickly.
The stranger standing before her made her instinctively take a small step back.
There was something about him that made her feel like she should be careful.
He was not simply a man.
He carried an authority she had never experienced before.
Luna lowered her gaze.
"No. I'm fine."
Alex studied her answer.
Too quick.
Too practiced.
He had met enough people in his life to recognize when someone was hiding the truth.
"You are shaking."
Luna looked down at her hands as if she had only just noticed.
"I'm okay."
Again.
That answer.
Alex did not understand why it bothered him.
Maybe because she said it like she had convinced herself of it.
His eyes moved toward the paper bag.
"What is inside?"
Luna hesitated before answering.
"The supplies."
"For you?"
She shook her head.
"For the orphanage."
For a moment, the rain was the only sound between them.
Alex looked at her carefully.
A girl who barely knew him.
A girl who had every reason to focus on herself.
Yet she was still thinking about people waiting for her.
Shadow's voice became softer.
Our Luna has a kind heart.
Alex almost frowned at the possessive tone.
Do not call her that yet.
A quiet amusement passed through Shadow.
You already know she is.
Inside the car, Adrian watched through the window.
He had expected Alex to return after a few minutes.
Instead, his Alpha was standing in the rain speaking to a stranger.
Adrian leaned back and crossed his arms.
That alone was unusual.
Alex Blackthorn did not stop for strangers.
He did not ignore danger, but he also did not involve himself in ordinary human problems.
Yet there he was.
Looking at a girl like she was the answer to a question he had never asked.
Adrian's expression became serious.
"Shadow found her," he whispered.
Even from inside the car, he could feel the change in the pack bond.
Something impossible had happened.
Back in the rain, Luna looked at the stranger in front of her.
She did not know his name.
She did not know why he was helping her.
And she definitely did not know that the man standing before her was someone feared by thousands.
To her, he was only a stranger who looked too powerful, too distant, and too difficult to understand.
"I should go," she said quietly.
She turned, but after only a few steps, dizziness suddenly washed over her.
The world tilted.
The paper bag slipped slightly from her hands.
Before she could fall, Alex moved.
His hand caught her arm.
The moment they touched, both of them froze.
Alex felt it.
A connection.
Not overwhelming.
Not something that erased his thoughts.
Just a quiet certainty.
Luna stared at him with wide eyes.
She had expected coldness.
Instead, she felt something else.
Safety.
And that frightened her more.
Because she had spent her whole life learning not to depend on anyone.
Alex released her arm slowly.
"Are you always this careless with yourself?"
The question sounded harsh, but his voice was quieter than before.
Luna looked away.
"I didn't want to trouble anyone."
Those words stayed with him.
Because for some reason, they felt wrong.
A person should not feel guilty for needing help.
Alex looked at the girl in front of him, the rain falling around them, and realized something he did not expect.
The bond had brought him to her.
But it was her heart that made him stay.
