Chapter 1
Luna Solene’s lungs burned with the icy fury of the gale as she surged through the dense, midnight forest in her wolf form, closing the distance between herself and Luchia before the treacherous truth could reach Alpha Kyro.
The wet earth churned beneath her massive paws, spraying black mud into the ferns as she launched herself through the air, landing squarely in front of the fleeing she-wolf. Her long claws tore deep into the soil, halting Luchia in her tracks with a spray of gravel and rotted leaves.
Both shifters snapped back into human form, tumbling into the underbrush and springing apart with bared teeth. Solene threw her hands up defensively, her chest heaving as she tried to bridge the gap between their hostility. She needed Luchia to understand the absolute necessity of what she had done, that mercy to a dying child was not a crime against their pack.
"Word has traveled through the white wolf hunters that black wolves keep slipping past our borders unbothered, and now I see why," Luchia spat, her voice trembling with venomous realization. "It was you, Solene. You are the leak."
Solene lunged forward, catching Luchia’s wrist mid-swing and hurling her backward with a surge of raw, desperate strength. Luchia crashed hard against a mossy boulder, the impact knocking the wind from her lungs, but she scrambled back to her feet instantly, unwilling to yield an inch of moral ground.
"Listen to me, Luchia! I am no traitor, and your accusations are born of blind panic!" Solene pleaded, keeping her stance wide and non-threatening.
Luchia shook her head violently, lunging again with claws extended, missing Solene’s throat by a fraction of an inch. "I am not blind, Solene! You held the head of that black wolf pup with the terrifying familiarity of someone who has done it a dozen times! Do not stand there and tell me you didn't break our sacred laws!"
"Open your mind, Luchia! Is it treason to pull a helpless child back from the threshold of death?!" Solene shouted back, the rain plastering her hair to her face.
"You should have let the filthy creature rot!" Luchia shrieked, driving her fist forward.
Solene sidestepped the blow, spinning behind Luchia in a fluid motion and driving a brutal kick into her lower back. Luchia stumbled forward, coughing up a dark spray of blood onto the rain-slicked moss.
"You raise your hand against me now because I tried to correct your filth?" Luchia wheezed, wiping her mouth.
Before Solene could brace for the counterattack, a flash of blinding lightning cracked overhead, instantly followed by the thunderous arrival of two massive white wolves shifting back into their male human forms. Exhausted from her miles of running and the heavy toll of saving the black wolf child, Solene’s defenses crumbled under the sudden two-on-one assault.
The two guards seized her thin arms, wrenching them behind her back before she could draw breath to chant a defense. With bone-rattling force, they slammed her spine against the thick trunk of an ancient redwood tree, wrapping heavy, venomous roots around her torso to pin her fast against the bark. Solene’s body was too weak to tear free from the binding wood.
"Leave us. I will handle her," Luchia commanded, stepping forward with a triumphant, wicked smirk.
Solene hung limply between the roots, rain streaming down her bruised forehead as warm blood trickled from a deep gash on her temple. She could taste the metallic tang of copper pooling at the corner of her split lip.
"Luchia," Solene choked out, her voice barely a whisper above the howling wind. "Why... why are you doing this?" Tears cut clean paths through the mud on her cheeks.
Luchia grabbed a fistful of Solene’s hair and wrenched her head upward, forcing her to look into eyes gleaming with sadistic satisfaction. Luchia’s own neck bore the purpling bruises and claw marks of their earlier struggle, but she wore them like medals of war.
"I am cleansing our pack of your rot, Solene," Luchia hissed.
"Is compassion a crime, Luchia?! If you had heard the cries of that innocent child, would you have simply walked away?!" Solene cried, her voice cracking with pure anguish.
"Yes, and I would have crushed its skull with my own hands because that is the law!" Luchia gasped for air, her chest heaving with exertion.
"You are a monster, Luchia! There is no soul left in you!"
Luchia’s claws elongated, slicing downward in a swift, brutal arc. The razor-sharp edge opened a deep, searing line across Solene’s collarbone, soaking her tattered cloth in crimson. Solene screamed, the agony echoing through the hollow forest.
"Your reign as Luna ends tonight, Solene. And I will make sure you never walk these lands again. A traitor belongs in the territory of the black wolves, where they can tear you apart until you are nothing more than broken pottery!" Luchia snarled, turning her back on the captive female.
"Luchia, no!" Solene screamed, but the other she-wolf dissolved effortlessly into the shadows of the storm.

"Has anyone seen Luna Solene?!" Alpha Kyro’s thunderous roar shook the polished wooden rafters of the grand palace hall.
He had spent the entire night pacing the obsidian floors, his stomach churning with an unrelenting dread. Solene had claimed she was only venturing into the nearby thickets for rare healing herbs, yet dawn was breaking and she still had not returned. In all their years bound together by the Moon Goddess, she had never once missed a night in his bed.
His frustration was sharp, jagged with disappointment; last night was the sacred alignment meant for them to conceive the heir to his throne. Instead, he had spent the hours listening to the tempest batter the palace windows, plagued by an unshakeable terror.
"Alpha... Alpha Kyro!"
Kyro snapped his head toward the arched entrance. A disheveled figure stumbled into the hall, her clothes shredded into ribbons, her skin a mosaic of raw scratches and deep purple contusions. She clutched her bleeding shoulder, limping heavily as she crossed the threshold.
"Luchia?!" Kyro rushed forward, catching the collapsing woman just before she hit the floor. He dropped to his knees, cradling her upper body against his armored chest. "Luchia, what happened? Where is my Luna?" His mind raced through a dozen catastrophic scenarios, his emerald eyes flashing with the unmistakable green hue of a wolf on the brink of shifting from sheer panic. "Tell me! Were you with Solene last night? What did you find?!"
"Alpha Kyro..." Luchia sobbed, her voice trembling with theatrical perfection.
"Speak, Luchia, right now!"
"Your Luna is a traitor!" Luchia’s words echoed off the stone walls, striking the grand hall like a physical blow. "The woman you chose as your mate... she conspires with our enemies!"
"Lies!"
Kyro shoved Luchia away from him, sending her sprawling across the marble floor as he staggered to his feet, fighting desperately to suppress the emerald wolf clawing at his throat.
"It is the truth! I saw it with my own eyes! I watched her nurse a black wolf pup back to health, sheltering the very beasts that slaughter our scouts!" Luchia cried out, curling into herself.
"Luchia!" Kyro’s voice boomed like thunder through the estate.
A collective gasp rippled through the gathered omegas and guards standing in the shadows.
"So she didn't leave for herbs at all..." whispered one omega, covering her mouth in horror.
"By the gods... that explains why the white hunters could never track those filthy black wolves. Luna Solene was clearing their paths!" another murmured.
Kyro glared at the trembling crowd with eyes burning like molten emeralds. "Silence! All of you, keep your tongues!" He turned back to Luchia, marching over and grabbing her by the collar of her ruined tunic, hauling her violently into the air. "You realize the weight of these words, Luchia! To falsely accuse a Luna is an offense punishable by the stripping of your family's honor... and death. Treachery against the crown is paid in blood."
Tears streamed freely down Luchia’s face, yet she nodded without hesitation, meeting his terrifying gaze with unwavering conviction.
"I stake my life and my family’s entire name on it, Alpha Kyro. Every word I have spoken is the absolute truth."
