Chapter 2

Chapter 2 The heavy stench of damp soil and iron lingered in the suffocating stillness of the clearing, clinging to Solene’s raw skin like a second coat of midnight shadow. Every breath she drew dragged through a throat as dry and cracked as a drought-stricken riverbed, each inhalation a sharp reminder of the venomous wood bindings that bit deep into her body. In the suffocating theatre of her own mind, her scream had torn through the canopy with the force of a falling star, loud enough to shatter the very roots beneath her. Yet reality was far more cruel, reducing her frantic desperation to a pathetic rasp that could barely rival the relentless buzzing of the swamp mosquitoes feasting upon the fresh crimson smeared across her collarbone. Her limbs hung heavy, boneless, and hollowed out by hours of exposure to the freezing predawn mist, leaving her trapped in a nightmare where her voice belonged to a ghost. Around her, the ancient forest of the Red Woods, stood as an indifferent witness, its towering trunks silhouetted against a bruised sky that refused to offer even the comfort of a passing breeze. The humid air carried the nauseating tang of stagnant floodwaters from the lower basin mixed with the heavy copper scent of battle, a visceral cocktail of her own blood and the splattered remnants of Luchia’s deceit. Every fiber of her clothing was stiffened and glued to her shivering frame, hardened by a chaotic clash that had unfolded hours ago beneath a violent symphony of thunder and jagged lightning. Now, the only sound piercing the gloom was the mocking, rhythmic chirping of distant forest birds, treating her absolute ruin with the casual disregard of nature going about its morning routine. She strained against the toxic roots, her muscles trembling violently beneath the strain, but the wood only tightened its grip, pumping a slow, paralyzing burn into her veins that threatened to extinguish the last flickering embers of her strength. A desperate prayer formed behind her cracked lips, directed silently toward the indifferent silver of the fading moon overhead. If the Goddess would not grant her mercy, she prayed instead for the fortune of a random patrol of loyal white wolves wandering off course, or perhaps for Alpha Kyro to wake early and take his stallion out for a solitary morning ride through the mist. The sudden, agonizing memory of what was supposed to have transpired between them just hours prior struck her like a physical blow, stealing the fragile air right out of her lungs. Tonight was meant to be the sacred bonding ritual, the night their energies would entwine beneath the celestial canopy to forge the bloodline heir Kyro had so desperately desired for the pack. Panic surged hot and frantic beneath her ribs, threatening to choke her as she imagined the sheer, blinding wrath he must feel right now, believing she had abandoned their bed for the shadowed heresy of the outcast kind. Her eyelids fluttered open as the crunch of damp twigs and hushed murmurs broke through the quiet of the morning, signaling the approach of figures moving through the dense ferns. Relief flared briefly in her chest before shattering entirely as two young female pack members emerged into the clearing, baskets of wild white daisies clutched tightly in their hands. They froze mid-step upon spotting her, their eyes widening not with the familiar warmth of reverence, but with a sudden, venomous disgust that turned her blood to ice. Only yesterday, these exact girls would have pressed their foreheads to the damp earth in submission the moment she walked past, acknowledging the sacred mark of their Luna. Now, they looked upon her as though she were nothing more than a discarded rag soiled in the mud, a rotting piece of refuse washed ashore by the storm. "Please, you must listen to me, look closer!" Solene pleaded, her voice cracking as she forced the words past her bleeding lips, desperate to pierce the veil of their sudden hostility. "It is me, your Luna Solene! The chosen mate of Alpha Kyro, sworn to protect this bloodline with every breath in my body!" Instead of stepping forward to offer aid or untie the agonizing bindings, the two girls exchanged a sharp, distrustful glance and took a collective step backward, their nostrils flaring as they caught the scent of her degradation. They regarded her with the profound, unyielding revulsion usually reserved for the feral black wolves who dared to desecrate the sacred borders of the white pack lands. "The entire Cavegate Pack and every allied territory already knows of your vile betrayal, Solene," one of the girls spat, her voice dripping with a venom that cut deeper than any blade. "To offer aid to a traitor of your caliber would make us no better than beasts, inviting a swift and absolute execution upon our entire lineage!" "You do not understand the truth of what happened in the dark!" Solene cried out, tears finally breaking free to carve clean tracks through the dried blood on her cheeks. "Luchia manipulated every shadow, she twisted the sequence of events to make it look like—" "Save your breath for the executioner, traitor," the second girl interrupted coldly, pulling her companion back by the sleeve. "We must hurry before the royal guard arrives to cleanse this clearing of your filth!" They turned their backs on her without a backward glance, disappearing swiftly into the thick foliage as if the mere air around her was cursed. Solene slumped forward, her forehead resting against the rough, damp bark of the Red Wood tree as dry, racking sobs tore through her chest. The betrayal cut through her spirit like a rusted dagger, leaving her completely stranded in a reality where her lifelong devotion counted for nothing against the poisoned whispers of an ambitious rival. She closed her eyes, surrendering herself to the biting pain of the toxic roots while whispering one final, desperate plea into the void. If the Moon Goddess demanded her title, her status, and every comfort she had ever known as penance for a crime she never committed, she would lay them all upon the altar without a sound, so long as her breath was spared for the dawn. Midway through her silent, agonizing vigil, the distinct, rhythmic thud of heavy hooves striking the forest floor echoed through the trees, growing louder and more purposeful with every second. A contingent of ten royal guards materialized from the mist, their armored mounts coming to a disciplined halt around her, parting just in time for Alpha Kyro to dismount from his magnificent red stallion. The sight of him sent a violent surge of hope and longing through her bruised body, temporarily overriding the agonizing burn of the poison in her veins. "Kyro! My love, my Alpha, please look at me!" Solene sobbed, her voice breaking into a desperate plea as she strained against the unforgiving wood. "Cut these bonds away, let me stand before you and clear my name! You know my heart, you know I would never compromise our pack!" The man who stepped toward her bore no resemblance to the tender mate who had whispered promises of eternity against her skin just a day prior; his expression was a frozen mask of pure, unadulterated fury. Without a single word of warning, Kyro closed the distance between them and unleashed a devastating backhand across her face, the raw force of the blow snapping her head to the side and opening a fresh gash across her cheekbone. A sharp gasp of agony escaped her lips as the coppery taste of blood flooded her mouth, her vision blurring from the sudden, violent impact. "That is why you never appeared in the chambers where I waited through the endless hours of the night," Kyro growled, his voice vibrating with a chilling, demonic resonance that sent shudders through every guard present. "Ky... Kyro, please, you must listen to reason!" she wept, blood dripping steadily from her chin to stain the moss below. "Luchia twisted the truth to trap me! I swear on the sacred blood of our ancestors, I am innocent of this treachery!" "Do not insult my intelligence further with your pathetic lies, Solene," Luchia snarled as she arrived and went down from her stallion. "I am not blind, nor am I a fool who can be easily manipulated. I saw the way you sheltered that wretched black pup in the clearing, and I saw the absolute lack of fear in your eyes when your treason was brought to light!" "I am innocent! I just helped a kid who was so needy in the midst of the dark surroundings and roaring skies!" "She is lying, Alpha! From the very beginning, my instincts warned me about her!" Luchia’s voice rang out smoothly as she stepped passing the guards, a triumphant smirk playing upon her lips as she interjected into their private devastation. "Her saintly demeanor was nothing more than a carefully constructed facade designed to hide a black heart!" "Silence, Luchia!" Solene screamed, the injustice fueling a brief, frantic surge of desperate defiance. "You are the one who will remain silent, traitor!" Kyro roared, his hand gripping her jaw with a bone-crushing pressure that forced her teeth together. The weight of his words felt like a physical blade slicing straight through her heart, far more painful than the physical blows or the toxic roots binding her flesh. The man who had once looked at her as his greatest treasure now gazed down at her with bottomless contempt, completely poisoned by the venomous lies of a rival. She watched in sheer horror as Kyro leaned down, his nose grazing the curve of her blood-stained neck to inhale the lingering scent trapped in the fibers of her torn fabric. The moment his senses confirmed the foreign trace of dark wolf blood clinging to her clothes, the last vestige of hesitation in his eyes vanished entirely, replaced by a cold, irrevocable damnation. "Guards," Kyro commanded, shoving her face away with a violent jerk that left her gasping for air against the rough bark. "Cut this traitor down from these roots and drag her to the deepest cells beneath the palace. Lock her away in the lower vaults reserved for the lowest of our kind, and ensure her cell is completely isolated so no one shall ever hear her deceitful voice again. She will wait until the day of persecution!" "As you command, Alpha Kyro!" the lead guard responded sharply, immediately stepping forward with a heavy iron blade to sever the poisonous vines. Without casting a single second glance toward the woman who had once ruled beside him, Kyro turned on his heel and swung himself back into the saddle of his red stallion, leading his men away into the grey mist without a backward look. Solene collapsed heavily into the muddy earth as the bindings fell away, her broken body trembling uncontrollably as heavy, silent tears washed the blood from her bruised skin. "Kyro..." she whispered into the empty, echoing forest, her voice swallowed whole by the wind as the shadows closed in around her.
