Chapter 3

The air inside the subterranean keep smelled of iron, old mold, and the sour stink of decaying skin. Deep beneath the roots of the ancestral mountains, the cells reserved for rogue infiltrators and captured Shadow-blooms were constructed from raw basalt, carved directly into the bedrock where no starlight could penetrate. Solene sat wedged against the farthest corner of the back wall, her knees drawn tightly into the hollow of her chest, her thin arms wrapped around her shins to trap the last remaining vapors of her body heat. A soft, jagged breath escaped her cracked lips, stirring the dust near her ankles. "Moon Goddess," she whispered into the stifling dark, her voice barely a rustle of dry leaves. "My life rests in your hands. If this stone pit is where my thread snaps, grant me passage to the quiet glades beyond, where my mother and father wait." For endless sunless cycles, she had been buried in the deepest throat of the prison. The lower corridors echoed with the sharp, sickening crack of iron-tipped flogs biting into flesh, followed by the agonized howls of tortured shape-shifters. The vibrations traveled through the stone floor, humming through her bones. Never in all her seasons among the Great Packs had she heard wolves weep with such broken, guttural desperation. Each shattered wail tore through her own chest, leaving her breath ragged and her spirit frayed. Her skin burned with jagged gashes. Without medicine or clean linen, she had been forced to scoop up damp, mineral-rich clay from the cell floor, mixing it with her own saliva to smear over the open wounds, relying on the instinctual healing of her bloodline to keep infection at bay. Her throat was a desert; her stomach gnawed against her spine in a relentless, hollow ache. Yet she forced her body to remain still, clinging to the memory of Alpha Kyro’s final cold command before the guards had dragged her below: She remained in the dark until the High Council gathered. A faint, rhythmic thudbing vibrated against the stone behind her back. Footsteps. Solene pressed her spine against the freezing basalt and pushed herself up. Her legs trembled, but she forced her stance to widen, digging her heels into the dirt. As her pulse spiked, her pupils dilated, swallowing the dark until her irises flared a brilliant, luminous cobalt, a fierce inner fire flickering within the depths of her gaze. A key scraped against iron. The heavy oak door groaned inward. "How are you, Solene?" A woman’s voice cut through the gloom, silky and thick with false sweetness. "How have the long days and endless nights in the dark treated you? Are you enjoying your new accommodations?" Luchia stood in the doorway, her silhouette framed by the flickering torchlight of the hallway. Behind her stood two towering guards clad in hardened leather and silver-plated pauldrons. In Luchia’s hands rested a polished mahogany tray bearing a wooden bowl of water and a chunk of graying meat. She stepped forward, the low light catching only the sharp curve of her chin and the sinister tilt of her lips. Solene’s jaw tightened. "You foul creature, Luchia. There is no depth of wickedness you will not plumb!" Luchia paused, letting out a soft, dramatic sigh. The corner of her mouth twitched upward in a triumphant smirk. "Wickedness? Is it wicked to guard the purity of the White-Wolf lineage? Is it evil to care for the survival of our blood?" "You speak of purity while violating every sacred oath!" Solene rasped, her voice trembling with rising fury. "You show no reverence for the Luna of the Cavegate Pack! You are a scheming fool!" Solene lunged forward, her fingers clawing at the air, but before she could cover the distance, the two guards lunged ahead. Heavy hands seized her shoulders, their iron grip bruising her flesh. They slammed their boots into the back of her knees, forcing her legs to give way. Solene hit the stone floor with a dull thud, a sharp gasp escaping her throat as her joints absorbed the impact. Luchia glided closer, bending down until her face was inches from Solene’s. "You dare call yourself Luna?" Luchia hissed, her breath warm against Solene's cold cheek. "A traitor who sheltered a pup born of the Shadow-blooms has no right to bear that title. That is not the act of a sovereign who loves her pack." She clicked her tongue in mock pity, her dark eyes locking onto Solene’s blazing blue ones. "Look at me, Solene. Look closely. In a matter of days, that golden mantle will belong to me." "Greedy... parasitical leech..." Solene spat, a single hot tear cutting a clean path through the grime on her left cheek. Luchia straightened her spine, her expression instantly turning to cold disdain. She lifted the mahogany tray and casually inverted it, dumping the dry meat and stale water onto the filthy dirt at Solene's feet. "We are finished here," Luchia commanded, turning her back without another glance. "Leave the traitor to rot in her mess." The heavy door slammed shut, the iron bolts sliding into place with a deafening clatter. Solene remained on her knees, her knuckles white as her fingers dug deep into the cold earth. Her pulse thundered in her ears, her chest heaving with suffocating humiliation. Yet beneath the rage, her body reminded her of its absolute fragility. Her hands shook violently as she reached down into the dirt, gathering the contaminated meat and the spilled water pool. Closing her eyes to block out the sour stench of decay, she forced the meager rations down her throat, swallowing hard against the bile rising in her neck. She needed the strength. She had to survive. The day of the trial arrived with the harsh pull of iron chains. Guards hoisted Solene from her cell, binding her wrists in silver-woven shackles that burned her skin on contact. They dragged her through the winding subterranean tunnels, forcing her upward into the daylight until the passageway opened into the vast expanse of the Sacred Cavern. The cavern echoed with a wall of sound. Hundreds of wolves from all six territories of the White-Wolf realm stood crammed along the stone terraces, their voices merging into a deafening roar of hostility. As the guards paraded Solene down the central aisle toward the high altar, the crowd surged forward. Jeers and curses rained down upon her. Small stones, hardened clay, and refuse pelted her head and shoulders. Solene raised her bruised, chained wrists to shield her face, her breath coming in ragged gasps as sharp edges cut across her skin. "Traitor!" a high-ranked warrior bellowed from the upper ledge. "Strip her of her skin! She deserves no breath!" "Can this truly be the female foretold in the high prophecies?" an elder sneered. "She is a blight!" "Judge her! Condemn the traitor of the Bluegold lineage!" Solene swept her eyes across the sea of twisted faces, searching for a single glint of mercy, a familiar gaze that might remember the seasons she had spent tending to their sick and guarding their borders. She found nothing but bare fangs and eyes burning with bloodlust. At the center of the elevated dais sat the High Council, flanked by ancient stone pillars. Beneath them, seated upon the carved throne of the Great Alpha, was Kyro. Beside him stood Luchia, draped in robes of fine white fur, positioning herself as though the throne was already hers. Solene’s eyes locked onto Kyro’s face. The emerald warmth that used to fill his gaze whenever he looked at her—the softness that had once treated her as an irreplaceable treasure—was entirely gone. In its place was a wall of black ice and unyielding contempt. Councilor Dothory, Luchia’s aunt, stepped forward, her voice booming off the cavern walls. "High Magistrate! Why do we waste precious sunlight on formal debate? The laws of our ancestors are absolute! Consorting with the black wolves is treason punishable by immediate execution! My niece caught her red-handed. The evidence is absolute!" A wave of thunderous agreement rippled through the gathering, the crowd pounding their fists against the stone benches. Solene kept her gaze fixed on Kyro, waiting for the man who had sworn his life to her to speak. He remained silent, his jaw clenched, his hand resting heavy on the pommel of his ceremonial blade. "The law is clear!" the Magistrate declared, raising his staff. "The penalty for the crimes committed by Luna Solene is death!" "Death!" the crowd roared back in unison. Suddenly, Kyro stood up. The entire cavern fell into an instant, dead silence. The emerald fire within his eyes blazed, casting a harsh glow across his hardened features. "Silence!" Kyro’s voice cut through the air like a blade, reverberating in the chest of every wolf present. "The final decree rests with me!" Solene’s heart lodged in her throat. "The ancient laws demand her blood," Kyro stated, his voice echoing off the high stone ceiling without a trace of hesitation. "Yet, in recognition of the heroic sacrifices made by her late parents for the survival of the White-Wolf realm, her life will be spared. But her existence will know no comfort." He stepped down from the dais, his cold eyes bearing down upon her. "Every title, every scrap of land, and every lineage right belonging to her is hereby forfeited to the crown. She is cast out from the high bloodlines forever." He raised his hand, channeling the heavy, suffocating pressure of his Alpha aura, crushing the air from the room. "I, Alpha Kyro, strip the traitor Solene of her status as Luna! From this day forth, she is nothing more than an Omega!" A deafening cheer erupted throughout the cavern as the crowd celebrated her downfall. Across the chamber, Dothory and Luchia exchanged a brief, triumphant glance, their lips curving into victorious smiles. Solene lowered her head, letting her hair fall forward to veil her face. She pulled her bruised arms tightly against her ribs, absorbing the wall of noise, the insults, and the sharp stones cast at her feet, while deep within her chest, a cold, dark ember began to burn.
