Chapter 35: The First Ally The farmhouse sat alone among endless fields. Rachel Hayes wasn't what Serena expected. She looked strong. Alert. Dangerous. Even with the shotgun lowered, she remained ready for a fight. "Serena," Rachel said again. "I thought you were dead." "I've heard that a lot lately." Rachel almost smiled. Then she noticed Adrian and Lily. Her expression immediately became serious. "You shouldn't be here." Before Serena could respond, Rachel pointed toward the distant road. Black SUVs appeared in the distance. Moving fast. Too fast. Phoenix. "They followed you," Rachel said. Adrian cursed under his breath. "We were careful." "Not careful enough." Rachel motioned toward the house. "Inside. Now." They rushed indoors. The farmhouse looked ordinary from the outside. Inside was something entirely different. Weapons. Computers. Maps. Emergency supplies. The place was a resistance safe house. Rachel quickly opened a hidden cabinet. "I've been preparing for this day for years." "For us?" Serena asked. "For Marcus." Rachel handed Serena a handgun. Then looked at Lily. A brief flash of sadness crossed her face. "She looks just like you." Serena frowned. "What do you mean?" Rachel immediately changed the subject. "Never mind." The strange reaction didn't go unnoticed. Before Serena could ask more questions, tires screeched outside. Phoenix had arrived. Rachel locked the doors. Adrian checked the windows. Lily stood ready. The battle for the farmhouse was about to begin. And none of them intended to surrender.
