Chapter 37: Victor Kane The underground tunnel led to an abandoned railway station several miles away. By sunrise they were safely moving toward their next destination. Victor Kane. The second name on Daniel Cross's list. According to Rachel, Victor had once been one of Phoenix's best intelligence analysts. Until he discovered the truth. "What truth?" Adrian asked. Rachel stared out the car window. "That Phoenix wasn't protecting the world." "What were they doing?" "Controlling it." The answer left everyone silent. Several hours later they reached an old repair garage hidden outside a small town. Rachel knocked three times. Waited. Then knocked twice more. The door opened. A large man appeared. Gray hair. Scarred face. Sharp eyes. Victor Kane. He immediately recognized Serena. For several moments he simply stared. Then he laughed. "I knew Marcus couldn't kill you." Serena smiled slightly. "Good to see you too." Victor welcomed them inside. Maps covered the walls. Computers hummed quietly. The garage served as another resistance headquarters. Then Victor's expression changed. "You need to know something." The room became silent. "What?" Serena asked. Victor looked directly at her. "Marcus isn't searching for Genesis anymore." Everyone frowned. "What do you mean?" Adrian asked. Victor's face darkened. "He's trying to activate it." The revelation changed everything.
