Chapter 30: Fire and Shadows
The attack began at 4:17 a.m.
Serena woke instantly.
Not because of a sound.
Because of a feeling.
A warning.
An instinct buried deep inside her subconscious.
For several seconds she lay motionless in bed, listening.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
Then she heard it.
A faint mechanical click somewhere outside.
Her eyes opened.
Danger.
She was already moving when the first explosion struck.
The entire safe house shook violently.
Glass shattered throughout the building.
A deafening alarm erupted from hidden sensors around the property.
"Everyone up!" Serena shouted.
She rushed into the hallway just as Adrian emerged from another room.
"What happened?"
Before she could answer, a second explosion rocked the house.
The lights flickered.
Then died.
Darkness swallowed everything.
Lily appeared at the end of the hallway.
Fear flashed across her face.
"Mom!"
Serena immediately grabbed her hand.
"It's okay. Stay with me."
Years ago, Serena had designed this safe house herself.
A memory surfaced unexpectedly.
Hidden exits.
Emergency supplies.
Escape routes.
The information returned with startling clarity.
"They found us," Adrian said grimly.
Outside, engines roared.
Several vehicles were approaching.
Too many.
Serena carefully pulled back a curtain.
Her stomach tightened.
Black SUVs surrounded the property.
Armed operatives advanced through the trees.
Night-vision goggles glowed in the darkness.
Weapons ready.
Disciplined.
Professional.
Project Phoenix.
"They're here," Serena whispered.
Gunfire erupted outside.
Bullets tore through the walls.
Wood splintered.
Glass exploded.
Lily flinched but didn't panic.
Years of training had prepared her for moments like this.
"Basement," Serena ordered.
The three of them ran downstairs.
The house shook again as another explosion detonated nearby.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Adrian grabbed emergency backpacks hidden behind a storage shelf.
"I've got supplies."
Serena nodded.
"Good. We're leaving."
At the far end of the basement sat an old workbench.
Beneath it was a concealed floor panel.
A memory flashed through Serena's mind.
She remembered installing it.
Remembered testing it.
Remembered planning for exactly this scenario.
Dropping to one knee, she unlocked the hidden compartment.
A narrow tunnel appeared beneath the floor.
Lily stared.
"How did you know that was there?"
Serena managed a faint smile.
"I think I'm starting to remember."
The tunnel stretched into darkness.
Safety waited at the other end.
At least for now.
As Lily climbed inside, Serena glanced through a small basement window.
A black SUV had stopped near the front gate.
Its driver's door opened.
One man stepped out.
Tall.
Calm.
Impeccably dressed despite the chaos around him.
Marcus Vance.
Even from a distance Serena recognized him instantly.
And somehow, she knew he recognized her too.
Their eyes met through the darkness.
Time seemed to stop.
Memories flickered at the edges of Serena's mind.
Marcus laughing beside her years ago.
Marcus training with her.
Marcus promising he would always protect her.
Then another memory followed.
Betrayal.
Pain.
Blood.
The memories vanished before she could fully grasp them.
Marcus smiled.
Not warmly.
Not kindly.
Like a man who believed victory was inevitable.
A chill ran down Serena's spine.
This wasn't just an enemy.
This was someone who had once been part of her life.
Someone who knew her better than almost anyone.
Someone dangerous.
"Mom," Lily called softly from inside the tunnel.
Serena looked away from Marcus.
The moment ended.
She lowered herself into the passage and sealed the entrance behind them.
Above, the attack continued.
But beneath the safe house, Serena, Adrian, and Lily disappeared into the darkness.
As Marcus watched the burning property, he placed a hand into his coat pocket and removed an old photograph.
The picture showed two younger operatives standing side by side.
Himself.
And Serena.
For a brief moment, sadness crossed his face.
Then it was gone.
"They can't run forever," he said quietly.
One of his agents stepped forward.
"What are your orders?"
Marcus folded the photograph and slipped it away.
"Find them."
His voice became cold.
"Whatever it takes."
Far below, Serena led her family through the tunnel, unaware that the war she had spent six years trying to escape had finally begun.
And this time, there would be no hiding from the truth.
