Chapter 8: The DNA File
The lunch meeting quickly became an interrogation.
At least on Adrian's side.
Serena remained frustratingly calm.
"Tell me something," Adrian said.
"No."
"You don't even know the question."
"I know you."
That earned a rare laugh.
Adrian leaned back.
"Do I make you nervous?"
"No."
"You're lying."
Serena met his gaze.
"You're not nearly as charming as you think."
For a moment, they simply stared at each other.
The attraction between them was becoming impossible to ignore.
And that was a problem.
A very dangerous problem.
Because neither trusted the other.
Later that evening, Victor entered Adrian's office carrying a secure folder.
"We got access."
Adrian immediately stood.
"The sealed records?"
Victor nodded.
"Partially."
He placed the folder on the desk.
Inside was a single document.
A hospital record.
Mother: Serena Hart.
Child: Female.
Date of birth: Six years ago.
Father: UNKNOWN.
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
Unknown?
Something about that bothered him.
The document looked incomplete.
Edited.
Deliberately altered.
Someone had removed information.
Someone powerful.
Victor spoke quietly.
"I think we're missing part of the file."
Adrian stared at the document.
His instincts agreed.
Someone was hiding the father's identity.

The question was why.
