"Have you read enough?" Ares focused his eyes on her. She was sitting on the floor, leaning her back on a bookshelf while she read a large book related to the world's history.
"Listen. Vampires don't rely mainly on their physical strength but more on their telepathic skills."
Staring at her serious expression, Ares reached out his hand and gently brushed the strands of hair away from her face. She paused from reading and shifted her eyes towards him. Even he was surprised by his actions.
"Y-Your hair. They're distracting." He stuttered. It wasn't a lie. It was nothing but the truth. He acted as if he was trying to read the book.
"Oh, alright. Sorry." She tucked the strands of her hair behind her ears and continued reading. Ares almost slapped his face.
He couldn't stop himself from staring at her. The way she focuses her eyes on the book and how immersed she was distracting. He wondered when will she ever look at him like that.
Wait, no.
What was he thinking?
He is the sole heir of his kingdom. He shouldn't be like this. Countless women were desperate to have him! They were even ready to kill for his attention.
Then without a warning, this mere human came into his life.
Does he even have to be concerned about her liking him? If he wants her, he could have her! It's just a pity that he doesn't interest himself in other species but his own.
That is why he would never ask her to be his Queen... He knew she wouldn't want that either anyway.
He was afraid that the day will come, where she would eventually leave him and no one could ever replace his longing for her.
Besides, he was fated to become the next king of the vampires. His people will soon rely on him. The future of his kingdom would be on his hands and such delusions like falling in love were out of his virtue.
He should not step further. He should let her be. He must push her away. That way, the fall would not be that painful.
But not until she's here by his side.
He wanted to treasure their moments together for a little while longer, but he would make sure to set up a boundary and not step on the line.
"The werewolves have stronger physical power than vampires, although both species have their unique abilities. They would be only distinguished whenever they use it." She read before looking at him curiously. "Do werewolves transform into wolf form?"
"They don't," answered Ares.
"Then, why do you call them werewolves?"
"You're the one who calls them that. They are lycans, not werewolves."
"Yes. Lycans are werewolves," Selene said, unblinking.
"They could only control wolves, not transform into them." He explained clearly.
"So, you don't turn into a bat?"
"Where the hell did you get that idea?" His eyebrow raised in confusion.
"It's... what I know." She reluctantly replied.
"That's not true. Just as how the lycans control wolves, we can manipulate bats as well. But not turn into one."
"Why?"
"What do you mean why? It's just like that. If you want to see something transform into something else, look for a Morphis."
"Your fangs."
She leaned in closer to brush his lips with her fingers. He was taken aback by her sudden action. His eyes widened in surprise and slowly felt his cheeks burn red. "This distinguished you from being a vampire, right?"
Ares went silent.
The close distance between them made it hard for him to process anything on his head. All he could only think of was her beautiful face looking back at him, inching closer and closer. He took in her unusual scent that he had never gotten used to. She had no idea how her touch was sending his body on edge.
"We are simply recognized as one whenever we use our abilities, that is when we usually act like werewolves."
They heard a voice enter their space. Her eyes widened when she realized it was the same young man she had encountered a while back. He slowly moved closer in her direction.
"Unlike vampires who bewitch their prey, lycans use strength to hunt them."
Prey. It echoed in Selene's ear for some reason.
Looking at the young man, she gulped a few times and showed a wry smile.
"It's you." She waved her hands at him. He took another step closer and with a serious face, he knelt before her.
"My alpha, I've found you. I've been searching for you ever since that night! If you are willing, let's take an oath and be my mate! I promise to be a better lycan our tribe could ever have after our marriage." He proposed with conviction, making Ares's and Selene's mouths hang open.
Alpha? Mate? Tribe? Marriage?
This man has never failed to make her speechless!
How could he ask her for marriage when they've only twice? Was it because he licked her on their first meeting?
That wasn't her fault! She did not ask him to lick her!
"What are you saying, lycan? Selene, do you know him?" His tone became serious than ever while his cold eyes examined the young man.
"No. But I met him before." Selene answered before hiding behind Ares's back. She was afraid the werewolf would turn into a lunatic again and attack her just like the last time.
"Get lost, vampire. This is not your business." He scowled at Ares.
"And how is this your business?"
"She's my mate."
"Are you f*****g kidding me? How come she is your mate? Lycans can't copulate other than their species!" Hearing them argue over her, Selene's face flushed in embarrassment.
Why wouldn't she, when she's been the subject of s*x of these two attractive morons?
"Do you think I don't know that?" The young man said.
"If you already know it, then why bother asking?" Ares responded.
"She belongs to our race. She's my alpha!"
"Are you insane?" Ares shielded Selene from the stranger. "She's not a lycan! She is a human! How can she become your alpha?!" Ares blurted out.
Both parties became silent. Ares thought that he was just another victim of Selene's enchanting beauty. However, he couldn't grasp how could royal blood of someone's lineage use excuses such as making the woman of their interest have the same bloodline as they are when they are not.
He just wanted to covet Selene's body. Asking her for marriage and saying that she is his tribe's alpha could be good reasoning for a divine betrothal.
But just like what Ares had said, she is not a lycan! How could she become his bride when she's just a mere human? Even though lycans have similar structures to vampires, their bloodline has its restriction when it comes to copulation.
Everyone knew about it. That if other lineage tried to co-exist with the lycans, it would not be able to bear the child hence suffering an inevitable death.
Cronus, on the other hand, couldn't understand why the vampire was interfering with his business with his alpha. He couldn't help but notice how close the two were, to the point that she was even using him for her protection. Why and how did this happen?
Since the beginning of their existence, lycans and vampires never had a common ground to unite them together. Seeing how similar they are to one another, they hated each other even more. Normally, when an alpha met a vampire with his same level of strength, it would spark a conflict between them.
It is only natural since they were enemies by blood, just like how water and fire couldn't be together. Even vampires and Lycans couldn't breathe the same air, which is why it was hard for him to believe that his alpha was hiding behind this vampire's back.
This should spark a conflict between them yet why do they look so harmonious together?
Why would a vampire protect a lycan and a lycan depend on a vampire?
"What's a human?" Instead of creating a conflict, he decided to have a calm approach. He already had a bad impression on her. He must do something about it.
"It's her race." Ares reluctantly answered even he was uncertain of himself. "That's what you call her kind."
The truth is, even Ares himself doesn't exactly know what a human is. He tried researching about it before but he couldn't find anything. She has the same physical features as a fairy so he just simply thinks that humanity is one of the fairy's categories.
But there were no signs of fairy powers on Selene. She is powerless and she was the rarest case he had ever encountered.
"Whatever is it, she is not a human. She is an alpha." Cronus said firmly.
"Stop lying. How could you say that?" Ares responded, holding on to Selene's hands. She stayed behind his back, trying to grasp everything she was hearing.
She was confused.
Why would an alpha of werewolves insist that she is one of them, which was a lie since she is a human?
"Her eyes, her scent, and her presence say it so. She has lycan blood. She's an alpha and you should have realized it in the first place. Don't you feel it too?"
