Tandy Malone’s day job was at a steak and seafood restaurant called The Flying Dutchman, the best seafood in the Midwest, which really shouldn’t be a bragging point, maybe. She was scheduled to work the two to ten shift, but a call begged and pleaded with her to work the ten to six to fill in for a sick co-worker, oh yeah, and then until ten when her normal shift would be over.
“Hello,” she sang into her cell phone, and she hustled around between tables heading for the kitchen.
“Hey, it’s me.” Her heart jumped at hearing his voice, and not in a good way. The man on the other end of the phone was Randy Millstone, the ex-boyfriend.
“I don’t have time to talk to you.” She spoke fast and a bit sharp.
“No, wait, hey,” the voice spoke quickly trying to be heard before she decided to hang up, “I heard about what happened last night.”
“Yeah? So?”
“Oh, come on, don’t be like that, babe. I’m calling because I care and wanted to find out if you are alright.” his voice sounded sincere but the girl wasn’t listening too much to the tone.
“Yeah, I’m fine, I gotta go.”
“Wait!”
“What?” She was getting impatient.
“May we talk? Like tonight? After work?”
“No!”
“Come on, babe, please?”
“Fine, whatever, I have to go.” and she hung up the phone.
