Chapter 6I dropped Mama off at the McKays for her bridge night—she always timed her arrival at seven o’clock sharp and would leave at eleven o’clock sharp; you could set your watch by it—and returned to the funeral home, both heaviness and anticipation in my heart. I had left Charlie to wash up dishes after dinner and hoped to find him still in the kitchen. The fact that he had offered to wash dishes boosted his standing with me. Not that his standing needed any boosting.
