Gu Xixi felt deeply conflicted.
Part of her wanted her grandmother to cause trouble for the Yin family, hoping it might derail the marriage. Yet another part feared her grandmother's potential humiliation would leave her utterly disgraced.
Deep down, she knew the truth: this marriage was inevitable. There was no escape for her.
But subconsciously, she refused to yield meekly to fate.
Perhaps sensing her inner turmoil, Yin Sichen’s gaze swept over Gu Xixi’s face, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes.
After a moment’s thought, Yin Sichen deliberately softened his imposing aura.
Instantly, Gu Xixi noticeably relaxed.
Was she afraid of him? Afraid of his power, his status? Or something else?
He meant to tell her not to be nervous, but the words that came out were different: "Being constantly this tense isn't beneficial for the child."
Gu Xixi’s heart settled. Of course. The Yin family’s grand display of support was solely about protecting the baby inside her. They feared her distress would affect the child.
How could it?
Even without this grand gesture, she would ensure her own happiness. Only then could the child grow healthily.
"You needn't worry. I won't affect the child. Emotions like this... they don't shake me anymore," Gu Xixi replied coolly.
Hearing her answer, Yin Sichen’s handsome brow furrowed deeply.
He disliked this version of Gu Xixi. He much preferred the woman he saw smiling amidst the camellias.
Once inside the house, Gu Xixi immediately withdrew her hand from his grasp.
Yin Sichen’s palm hung suspended for a fraction of a second before he smoothly retracted it, feigning nonchalance.
Assistant A had already brought chairs for them. As they sat down, Grandmother Gu shot Gu Xixi a disapproving glare.
Before she could voice any reproach, Madam Yin spoke with a gentle smile. "Someone prepare a soft cushion for the Young Madam’s back. Sitting for long periods can be taxing on the waist during pregnancy."
Pregnancy?!
The Gu family members present were stunned!
Gu Xixi was pregnant!
"Xixi is considered a treasure within our Yin family now," Madam Yin declared, her tone leaving no room for doubt. "Regardless of whether the child she carries is a boy or a girl, it will be the heir to the Yin family." This single statement solidified Gu Xixi’s position irrevocably and choked back the reprimand on Grandmother Gu’s lips.
Grandmother Gu’s face burned as if slapped. Just yesterday, she’d berated Gu Xixi for failing to secure a pregnancy with a wealthy man. The irony stung.
She swallowed hard. "Then... your visit today is to…?"
Madam Yin wasted no time on pleasantries. "My grandson, Sichen, and your granddaughter, Xixi, have always been deeply compatible. Heaven has blessed us with the fourth-generation heir of the Yin family! Since the young ones are willing and I have no objections, I’ve brought the bride price list today." She gestured, and a servant presented a document. "Eight million eight hundred and eighty thousand yuan in cash. A villa valued at one hundred million yuan, to be transferred to Xixi upon the child’s birth. Additionally, there are jewels, stocks, and bonds listed here. I hope you won’t find it too meager."
Meager? How could this be meager?
The total bride price easily surpassed two hundred million yuan!
Grandmother Gu’s eyelid twitched violently at the mention of eight million cash. Her eyes lit up greedily when she heard about the hundred-million-yuan villa.
She conveniently ignored the fact of Gu Xixi’s pregnancy and her own harsh punishment inflicted just a month prior.
"Dear relative, you are far too generous!" Grandmother Gu beamed, her smile stretching wide. "I also believe these two children are a match made in heaven! As an elder, I couldn’t be happier. Even if you offered nothing, I wouldn’t dream of opposing!" she simpered.
"Good. Since you have no objections, the marriage is settled," Madam Yin continued smoothly. "The birth of the Yin family’s fourth generation is a monumental event. I’ve already established a trust fund overseen by lawyers. Upon the child’s safe arrival, both principal and interest will be paid in full." She gestured again. "Here is two hundred thousand yuan in cash for your immediate use, dear relative. Should you require more, do not hesitate to ask."
As she spoke, a servant stepped forward, placing a small case before Grandmother Gu and opening it.
The sight of stacks of crisp, new red bills transformed Grandmother Gu’s face into a radiant sunflower.
"Wonderful, wonderful! You are too kind, dear relative! I shall gratefully accept," Grandmother Gu gushed, clutching the case with unrestrained delight.
Meanwhile, Gu Zhenzhen’s family and her prospective in-laws had long been pushed aside, relegated to the courtyard. There was no place for them inside the house anymore.
Despite it being their proposal day, the sheer scale and opulence of the Yin family’s display left Gu Zhenzhen seething with mad jealousy. Not only was Gu Xixi’s man impossibly handsome, he was obscenely wealthy! This was utterly unbearable!
Gu Zhenzhen’s in-laws’ faces burned as if repeatedly slapped. They could barely lift their heads.
The girl they had collectively scorned had transformed overnight into the bride of an immensely wealthy family. It was a bitter pill they struggled to swallow.
