‘No, but then I wasn’t outside until Billy came and fetched me.’ I watched his face, the little furrow, the way he kept lining up the knife and fork again. ‘Macca couldn’t have come back here. They said he was already dead.’ ‘He was. But he didn’t die here, did he?’ ‘No. The crime scene people said he’d been put in the dumpster later.’ I was trying hard not to remember that open lid. ‘The techs found blood on the ground in the forest parking area – it took them a while. It’d all been covered with dirt and leaves. The evidence in the 4WD suggests that it was used to bring his body here after dark, then driven back and dumped down the gully.’ ‘Oh.’ I stared at him blankly. ‘Why would the murderer do that? Why not leave him in the 4WD? Surely it was a big risk bringing him back here?’ ‘G
