Upstairs check was done quickly, and Hawke locked Macca’s room and pocketed the key. I checked the time again – it was nearly midnight, but thankfully the other staff had been allowed to go. It was just me, Bob and the cops. And whoever was knocking at the front door. I hoped to God it wasn’t Carl wandering out for a pee under the trees, or one of the locals deciding they wanted another drink. Both had happened before.
