Galanna Tanaka

Galanna Tanaka, 22, lives in Kyoto, Japan, with her traditional Buddhist family. Her parents, Hiroshi Tanaka, a respected monk, and Aiko Tanaka, a devoted practitioner, instill in her the values of meditation and compassion. However, behind this facade lies a secret: her uncle Takeshi's dictatorship, imposing strict rules on religious practice and closely monitoring the family's choices, especially Galanna's.

One evening, during a family meal, Takeshi addresses Galanna with a heavy authority. "Galanna, you must understand that our heritage is precious. Don't let modern ideas stray you from our path." She feels trapped, her thoughts disagreeing with her uncle. She suspects that their family is hiding a secret related to the true nature of their faith, but she dare not ask questions. This pressure makes her anxious and questions everything she has learned.

Vynessa Miller

Vynessa Miller, 28, has always been a devoted Christian, but her faith has been tested after the tragic loss of her younger sister, Emma, and her fiancé, Mario. In a flashback, Vynessa remembers the day she lost Emma. Their last moment together takes place in a park, where they laugh and share their dreams. "Promise me you'll always believe in us, even when it gets tough." The accident occurs a few hours later, and Vynessa finds herself in the hospital, holding Emma's hand as the monitoring equipment flatlines. The grief is unbearable.

Shortly after, Mario, whom she believed would always be there to support her, dies in a car accident, leaving Vynessa in a spiral of despair. "Why did you leave me alone? How can I continue to believe in a God who allows this?" She finds herself in a church, her heart heavy, seeking answers. The pain pushes her to explore different philosophies, including Buddhism, but she still feels empty.

Amir El Mansouri

Amir El Mansouri, 25, lives in Paris, France. Born in Marrakech, Morocco, he moved to Paris with his family at the age of 10. His father, Khalid El Mansouri, is an imam, and his mother, Leila El Mansouri, a woman with a rich background, has always encouraged open-mindedness. However, Amir feels constant pressure from his father to conform to Islamic traditions.

He remembers discussions with his father, where he is often encouraged to focus on his faith, but this creates a sense of rebellion within him. "Amir, faith is our anchor in this chaotic world. Never forget it." Amir acquiesces, but he feels torn. At university, he meets a group of Christian students discussing the concept of an unconditionally loving God. "Do you really believe God can love without condition?" These conversations make him reflect on his own spirituality. One evening, he strolls along the Seine, thinking about his roots and observing the city lights. "Why must I choose between my roots and my aspirations? Can there be a path that unites both?" He begins to explore Christianity more closely, intrigued by the idea of a personal relationship with God, but he knows this might put him at odds with his father and culture.

The chapter ends with each character standing at a crossroads in their life, confronted with their past, pain, and trials. Their paths, though different, are all marked by a quest for meaning and belonging.
