Chapter 3 Make Some Tips

The doctor sighed. "But the balance on your card has been cleared. There's no money for the surgery. You're still short at least two hundred thousand." It hit me like a bolt of lightning. My whole body went numb, cold sweat breaking out down my back. I never thought Randy would go this far just to play house with Jade. He even cut off my mom's medical funds. Seeing my expression, my mom gently tugged at my sleeve. "Sweetheart… don't go begging him anymore because of me…" I shook my head desperately, choking on my tears. "Mom, you're the only family I have left. I'll get you treated no matter what." My vision blurred with tears. I didn't see the redness in her eyes, full of pain for me. And I missed the way she looked at my back as I left, that lingering, reluctant gaze. I rushed all the way home without stopping. When I got there, Randy was coaxing Jade to eat breakfast. The table was filled with dishes of every kind. From milk and bread to caviar and filet mignon. The contrast was so blatant it made my blood boil. Thinking about my mom lying there, weak and pale, I snapped. "Randy, why did you cut off my mom's medical expenses?" Randy looked surprised. "When did I..." "I did." Jade wiped her mouth, looking at me with pure arrogance. "Mrs. Hall, your daily allowance is ten dollars. If your mom needs money, go earn it yourself." I was shaking with anger. I stared at Randy in disbelief. "You're just going to let her do whatever she wants?" "Jade," Randy finally said, "maybe we should..." Before he could finish, Jade cut him off. "You're going to spoil her again, aren't you?" She shot to her feet, the chair screeching harshly against the floor. "When you brought me here, what did you promise? That everyone in this house would listen to me. And now your wife can break my rules with just one sentence? Then what am I even doing here? I'm leaving." Randy immediately grabbed her. "Alright, alright. We'll do it your way." I stood there, frozen, feeling like my heart was about to split in two. This was the man I had loved for ten years. My mom and I were nothing but tools he used to please his mistress. I looked at the table full of expensive food and let out a bitter laugh. "Jade, you tell us to live frugally, so why are you living like this? If I'm not mistaken, that dress you're wearing costs hundreds of thousands, straight off a runway." Jade pouted, completely unbothered. "Those rules are for the Hall family. I'm not one of them." "Do you even know how hard it is for people to make money? What you spend on drinks and meals in a day could be someone's entire monthly expense." Looking at her covered in luxury, I lost it. I lunged at her and grabbed her hard. The next second, my face burned. Randy used all his strength and slapped me to the ground, then immediately turned to rub Jade's neck with concern. He looked at me, his face dark. "I told you. No one gets to bully Jade." Jade lifted her chin stubbornly. "If you want money, go earn it yourself." Then she grabbed my arm and dragged me outside to a car. "Tonight, I'll make an exception. You can come back after 8." Jade took me to the place where all the rich second-generation elites in Harbor City hung out. Looking at my pale face, Jade smiled smugly. "People should learn to rely on themselves. Go serve tea, pour drinks, wipe shoes for the bosses or whatever. You might even make some tips."
