Before dawn the next day, Kimi crawled out of her bunk fully dressed in holey jeans and a ripped T-shirt. She crept across the room, glancing back at the motionless form in the other bunk. She shut the door as slowly as possible, cringing when the hinge creaked, and then she sat down on the hallway floor to slip on her tennis shoes. Looking around the employee bunkhouse entrance to make sure no one saw her, she bolted across the parking lot and raced full throttle across the grounds toward the train station. The predawn mountain air was frosty, and Kimi wished she’d thought to wear a sweatshirt. She ran faster to warm up.
