The heavy Dallas sky opened wide and poured down sheets of rain. Jessica was looking forward to getting back to Montana; at least there when it rained it was cool and fresh. When they arrived at the airport, the driver gave David an umbrella, so she huddled next to him, trying to stay dry as she sloshed through puddles and jumped over pools of water on the tarmac. David handed the umbrella to the flight attendant as he stepped into the airplane, and Jessica ducked in after him. Kimi hadn’t said a word since they’d left the boy behind. Silent tears streamed from her puffy red-rimmed eyes. Before takeoff, she’d whispered something to the flight attendant, who strode off and discreetly returned with a barf-bag.
