6.The Chao Phraya River was already a dark mass; tiny lights shone on its banks. Paul couldn’t believe how lucky he was. Though he was sitting in an incredibly unstable boat and had no idea where they were headed, he didn’t care, because the woman he had met yesterday was there beside him. Helen had suggested the boat ride, and though Paul had expected only dinner, he didn’t mind that their evening had taken a different turn. “Are you scared?” asked the woman with a smile, looking at his hand. Only then did Paul notice that he was spastically gripping the edge of the boat, as if expecting one of the bigger waves to whisk him away. “Who knows what’s lurking in this river…” he answered with a smile, and released his hold. “Crocodiles?” the woman mused. “Yes, there must be crocodiles.” “Y
