18 The Field of Fire was a complete contrast to the icy walls of the canyon. Ross stared out across the scorched ground. Pools of lava bubbled and glowed while plumes of smoke filled the air with the distinct odor of sulfur. Through the bubbling pools of molten rock, he could see a narrow path that weaved its way through the field. In the distance, he thought he could see the shimmering ripples of water – the Great Lake – or a mirage.
