Chapter 7: The Veteran

As soon as these people appeared, they drew the attention of the surrounding monsters. Several zombies caught the scent of the living and charged forward with roars. “901, be quick and decisive—don’t make too much noise. If we draw out that monster Griswold now, things will get troublesome!” said a man in black leather armor, holding a small wooden staff. He looked to be in his late twenties, but his eyes were unusually cold. At that moment, one of the men—a burly fellow carrying an incredibly heavy-looking broadsword—stepped forward. With a swift movement, he swung the sword and executed a series of axe-like techniques. In just a few seconds, he hacked the zombies into pieces. “This is our second mission to ‘rescue Kain.’ We’ll follow the previous tactics: 901 and 902, you two are responsible for distracting Griswold. 933 and I will sneak around to the back of the church to rescue Kain. Once Kain uses the portal to leave, all four of us will attempt to kill this monster. The first act, sixth chapter of The Demon Chapter will reset in thirty demon days, so we still have a chance. Remember—if you encounter danger, don’t get overconfident. It’s fine to try again next time. In this world, as long as you don’t die, there’s always a chance!” While the young man spoke, he silently recited a spell. With a wave of his staff, the putrid blood and flesh that had just burst from the zombies rose into the air. Moments later, two skeletons wielding bone blades stood up from the corpses. “Boss, don’t worry—we’re not doing this for the first time. Just stick to the plan. This time, after we save Kain, we’ll try to kill Griswold. I heard that on the Demon List, this Griswold has only been killed seven times. If we kill him, we’ll not only get a large amount of time reward, but there might also be equipment with good attributes that drops. If we get even one piece, we’ll be rich,” said the thin man holding a bow—No. 902. “Stop talking nonsense. Surviving to complete the mission is more important than anything. The air here is nauseating—let’s get started!” said the only woman among the four, her voice icy. The four of them moved with clear tacit understanding: the man with the axe and the thin archer headed straight for the front of the church, while the young man led two freshly summoned skeleton warriors and the woman around to the back. They’d rescued Kain before, so they were all familiar with the route. However, as the woman passed a certain spot, she took a few extra steps and walked around a body. “According to our prior agreement, it’s my turn to take Vitamin’s body this time!” the woman said as she bent down. The young man leading the two skeleton warriors nodded without saying a word. But soon, the woman examining the body let out a puzzled sound. “What’s wrong?” “This body—someone beat us to it!” Her face showed a strange expression. “How is that possible!” The young man was taken aback and hurried toward the church. If Vitamin’s body had already been looted, then Kain might have been rescued by someone else—and their trip would be in vain. But when he rounded the back and saw Kain still tied up, he breathed a sigh of relief. Seeing the bodies nailed to the shelves inside, he suddenly understood and let out a short laugh. “Kain is still here. Someone tried to rescue him earlier but failed—and they all died here. Maybe they managed to free Kain briefly before Griswold killed them all!” The young man was clearly experienced; with just one glance, he roughly pieced together what had happened. But no matter what—as long as Kain was still here, that was enough. In front of the church, the giant axe-wielder stood firm, while the thin archer hid tens of meters away, nocking an arrow and signaling the big man ahead. The latter chuckled, then let out a roar. The sound was so loud it startled every monster in the church—including Gavin Lin, who was pretending to be a corpse on the ground. At first shocked, he quickly realized the rescuers he’d been waiting for had finally arrived. This filled Gavin Lin with immense relief—someone’s arrival confirmed his earlier deduction was correct. Griswold roared in response—but instead of charging out immediately (perhaps remembering how Kain had nearly escaped last time), he grabbed a zombie whose entire body glowed green and barked commands in a language Gavin Lin couldn’t understand. Only then did he charge out in fury. The “leader”-level zombie roared, and instantly, all the zombies in the church gathered around Kain, as if to block any rescue attempt. “What’s going on here?” The young man holding the staff was taken aback, and the cold-eyed woman beside him looked utterly stunned. They’d never seen Griswold organize his forces like this before. “Damn it—the task difficulty must have increased!” the woman snapped. The young man nodded. “It’s possible. But regardless, 901 and 902 can’t hold Griswold off for long. We must rescue Kain and support them as soon as possible!” With that, he commanded the two skeleton warriors with sharp bone blades to charge into the church. The woman recited a spell, and a fireball appeared in her hand. The next second, it shot forward and crashed into a zombie. BOOM! The zombie was blasted in half and collapsed to the ground. This startled all the zombies, who roared and rushed forward. Lying on the ground, Gavin Lin watched the whole scene in astonishment. He had fought desperately and exhausted himself to kill a single zombie—but in the woman’s hands, it was destroyed with a single move. The gap in power was staggering. Just how strong was her attack? “Are they Contractors too? No ordinary person could have such abilities—they must have grown stronger through some means!” Gavin Lin guessed, feeling a strange excitement in his heart. Now that the nearby zombies had left, Gavin Lin finally suppressed his curiosity, quietly got up, stepped over to Kain—who was just a few steps away—and cut the ropes binding him with the dagger in his hand. “Thank you for your help, young man. You are the most intelligent and brave person I have ever met!” Kain said in a deeply magnetic voice once freed. Then, as if by magic, he pulled out another town teleportation scroll and activated it, opening a blue portal. “No good—someone rescued Kain before us!” The fireball-wielding woman finally noticed what was happening near Kain and saw the portal already open. And she saw a “zombie” standing beside him. “Damn it!” The young man beside her also saw it, cursed, and commanded the two skeleton warriors to cleave a zombie in half. He watched helplessly as Kain and the “zombie” stepped into the portal, one after the other. In that instant, the woman quickly pulled a red scroll from her bosom, yanked it open, and a ray of light shot out, ensnaring the shadow of the “zombie.” “That’s not a zombie—it’s a Contractor in disguise. His number is… 1065!” The woman stared grimly at the scroll, which displayed a string of digits. Suddenly, the entire scroll burst into flames and turned to ashes. Clearly, this was a single-use item capable of revealing another Contractor’s ID—destroyed after activation. At that moment, Gavin Lin paused briefly and glanced back. “Number 1065? Good—I’ve remembered it. You dared steal my task? I’ll remember this grudge. Pray you don’t run into me next time… or you’re dead!” the young man shouted fiercely, his eyes locked on Gavin Lin. Gavin Lin twitched his ears but said nothing. He stepped through the portal—and in the next second, vanished without a trace. The portal itself dissolved moments later.
