When Gavin Lin saw the recruitment notice, an idea suddenly struck him.
He was now certain Rowan Long would make a move against Laurel—but the timing remained unclear. If he could get close enough to protect her directly, that would be even better.
Glancing at the teaching position listed in the announcement, Gavin thought for a moment, then pulled out his phone and dialed the number provided.
...
Gavin signed up over the phone, and the school scheduled a group interview for the next day. Afterward, he hurried off to forge a new ID card.
In today’s world, it’s easy to find fake-ID vendors through the small ads plastered on utility poles. Gavin needed a new identity because he was now a wanted criminal—his old ID was useless. For the rest of the morning, he changed his hairstyle and grew a beard, making himself look significantly different and unrecognizable.
To ensure he got his new ID early, he headed to an internet café near a school entrance and continued searching for information about Owen Xu—but again found nothing. Later, he opened the game forum and began looking up relevant details.
By the time school let out, Gavin had secretly escorted Laurel back to her aunt’s residential complex. Once he saw her safely inside, he breathed a sigh of relief and returned to his temporary lodging.
It was now 7 p.m., and Gavin had only nine hours of life remaining. This urgency pushed him to return to the Demon Chapter world to take on a task.
Still, he ate something and rested for half an hour before using a special spell to open the teleportation portal back to “the room.”
The room was unchanged. Gavin looked himself over and confirmed all his previous gear was still there. He went to the “Demon Chapter” interface and checked the items listed in the “Auction House.”
As expected, the green-quality “Fire Wand” had been bought at the fixed price—clearly, Gavin’s asking price was far below market value for green-tier equipment, making it highly attractive. He had 48 hours left to collect the proceeds. Meanwhile, the white-quality leather armor and Wirt’s Leg hadn’t sold yet, but someone had placed a bid; the trade would auto-complete once the auction timer expired.
“Collection Time!”
Without hesitation, Gavin added 48 hours to his clock. Instantly, a wave of relief washed over him—though he knew it was purely psychological. After all, even with just one minute left on the clock, he wouldn’t die.
His total time now stood at a comfortable 57 hours.
But in practical terms, that was barely over two days—time that slipped away quickly in daily life. And here, time truly was money: needed to buy items, and essential in abundance to level up.
Next, Gavin spent 35 hours to raise his level from 1 to 2. A golden light flashed, and the fatigue from sleepless nights vanished instantly. His updated stats now read:
Contractor 1065
Bloodline: Human | Gender: Male | Level: 2 (49 hours required to reach Level 3)
HP: 80 | Defense: 14
Attributes:
Strength: 8 (3)
Agility: 8 (3)
Stamina: 8 (3)
Intelligence: 6 (3)
(Values in parentheses represent standard male baselines.)
Skills: None | Profession: None
Unallocated Attribute Points: 5
After a brief pause, Gavin decided to invest all 5 points into Agility.
This brought his Agility to 13 and increased his Defense by 2, raising it to 16.
He gripped his dagger and swung it—the blade flashed with a cold glint, clearly moving faster than before. Satisfied, he opened the Demon Chapter’s task list to browse available missions.
Contractors must accept a task from the task list to enter a task world—that was the rule. Therefore, they needed to identify the setting and background of each task world based on its description.
Without familiarity with the game referenced, it would be impossible to guess which world a task belonged to.
Gavin aimed to become a “Thief”—a class in World of Warcraft. Right now, he was specifically searching for tasks tied to that game.
After a long search, he finally found one:
Task: Mysterious Events in Goldengrove
Investigate the truth behind a series of strange occurrences in Goldengrove over 12 hours. Note: The source of these events lies with Edder Feodor.
Success Condition: Uncover the truth behind the incidents.
Reward: +12 hours
Failure Penalty: –12 hours (if truth remains undiscovered within the time limit)
Difficulty: Difficult
Goldengrove was a beginner Alliance town in World of Warcraft.
This task seemed to hold little appeal for others. Each listing showed how many contractors had accepted it and how many had completed it. For “Mysterious Events in Goldengrove,” fewer than five had taken it—and even fewer had succeeded.
Initially, Gavin hadn’t wanted to accept such a low-interest task either. But it was the only one on the list that granted entry into the World of Warcraft universe.
Fortunately, the failure penalty fell within his acceptable risk range—though in reality, factoring in the 12 hours spent inside the task world, the total time cost would be higher.
For Gavin, however, this was his only option. With 22 hours remaining, he could afford the expenditure.
Without delay, he accepted the task.
Accept task: “Mysterious Events in Goldengrove.”
Contractor ID 1065.
You may choose immediate teleportation to the task scene or forced teleportation in one minute.
“Teleport immediately!”
The moment Gavin spoke, a flash of white light filled his vision. In the next instant, he opened his eyes and found himself in a picturesque setting.
He stood in the center of a peaceful town. A few guards patrolled nearby, carrying shields and longswords. Tall trees surrounded the area, green grass carpeted the ground, and several plump rabbits lounged about, nibbling on blades of grass.
Contractor ID 1065 has entered Chapter 1, Section 7: World of Warcraft, Alliance territory — Goldengrove.
Hearing the system prompt, a smile tugged at Gavin’s lips.
“Here lies Golden Spark Town—the Alliance stronghold in World of Warcraft, and the closest settlement to the human capital, Stormwind!” (Note: Orgrimmar is the Horde capital; Stormwind is the human/Alliance capital.)
Gavin had done his homework beforehand. After taking a quick look around, he spotted the inn—according to game lore, profession trainers were usually stationed there.
Inside the inn, the first floor buzzed with activity. Patrons sat at wooden tables, drinking from mugs and chatting loudly. When Gavin entered, they turned to glance at him, chuckled, and went back to their conversations.
Clearly, they mistook Gavin—dressed in simple clothes—for a fresh recruit just out of Northshire Abbey.
Gavin took a steadying breath. He could sense these weren’t ordinary NPCs; each radiated a powerful aura. He walked calmly to the middle-aged man behind the bar and said, “Hello. I’ve just arrived from Northshire Abbey. I’m looking for a thief trainer.”
In World of Warcraft, Northshire Abbey was indeed the starting zone for human characters, so this cover story raised no suspicion.
Sure enough, the innkeeper sized Gavin up and pointed toward the wooden staircase beside him.
“The one you’re looking for is upstairs. To be honest,” he said gruffly, “I admire the courage of warriors, respect the wisdom of mages, and hold high regard for paladins who walk in the Light—but the only ones I can’t stand are folk like you who skulk in the shadows. Be gone from my sight, lad.”
With that, the man turned away to serve another customer, ignoring Gavin completely.
At this point, Gavin wore a dagger at his waist, and since he’d asked for a thief trainer, everyone naturally assumed he was a rogue.
Gavin paid no mind to the innkeeper’s opinion. He gave a polite “thank you” and climbed the wooden stairs.
