v> “There’s a tradition!” Becca bit her lips and put her hands between her legs, the night was going
to be a long one “when a real Fridolf comes of age and cannot take a mate here, they’re sent
out to the world to find one” her life was getting weirder by the minutes “mate, do you mean a
partner” an Uncle smiled at her “you’re very smart Becca but we mean a mate” He said a mate
was more than a partner, a mate was a soulmate and until they found each other they would be
miserable even with other partners. Everyone was taking turns speaking and it was beginning
to mess her head up “I was very lucky, I found mine here in this small town!” an auntie to her
right smiled her words away “where is he now? He’s not in this circle?” They had said not all
Fridolfs were allowed in the circle afterall “he’s not, He’s human!” Mates, human, she felt like
she were in some fantasy story “I suppose my Father went out in search of my Mother” the
circle agreed “he was supposed to come home when you turned five” finally a story she wanted
to hear “what happened, why didn’t he return to you?” He died, her mother had told them their
Father died when they turned two, she said it was in an accident, an accident that involved a
wild animal, she never said more about how he died. Sometimes Becca imagined she was there
when he died and when she imagined long enough she would feel like he felt on that deathbed,
she even dreamt it one time, it was a monster had crawled into bed with her and her sister but in
the dream the monster became her father and he wouldn’t wake up “your Father died before
you turned five” how did they know she existed then, if her Father hadn’t returned to them “your
Father sent pictures of you and your sister all the time, he told us of how much alike you were,
he loved both of you and he did everything to protect you!” Everyone said protection as though
she had been in danger as a child “ what did he need to protect me from, I was only a child!”
The circle did not agree “there was a prophecy Becca, you were a prophesied child” it was
getting too much for Becca’s young mind “what prophecy Grandma?” The circle grew silent and
her Grandmother began a story, theirs was no ordinary family but they were ordinary as a pack,
every child born to them inherited a powerful bloodline but that bloodline was subjective to other
packs, and so when the prophecy about a Luna being burn into their family came, the Fridolfs
sent out five persons who were had just come of age “ your Father was the last to have a child
from those five people and only he had a daughter” her Grandmother continued her story like
Becca’s world was not falling apart “with your birth came threats, plenty of it” other packs who
had gotten a wind of the prophecy sort the newborn out “it was a silly fight if you ask me, every
pack has their own alpha and Luna but those idiots wanted the life of child because a prophecy
said an alpha would come and that alpha would unite all packs” the people who wanted Becca
dead acted out of fear “they wanted you dead because they thought if such an alpha arises, he
would favor his Luna’s pack!” It was an incredible story but Becca was having none of it “you all
are sitting here and listening to this?” She looked round at the faces of those in the circle, they
seemed to believe the story that her Grandmother had just told “ an alpha and a Luna!” She hit
her chest “me a Luna?” She was coming to believe that hers wasn’t the only mind hunted in the
family “you realize these are werewolves stories right? Grandmother needs a Doctor!” A pain
was rising in her head “I’m no Luna! I’m human, my entire life I never grew any hair aside the
one on my head! I’m not an animal” she held her head and screamed, her skin felt like theywere on fire and her head like a drumming contest was beginning “I am normal, normal human
girl” she was doubting it even as the words came from her mouth, everyone was staring at her,
nobody attempted to hold or help her “the full moon is approaching Becca and you’re turning
eighteen!” What did that have to do with the commotion in her head? “This is why you’ve been
brought back home my child, when the moon reaches its peak you will transform before then
there’s nothing we can do for your symptoms” what symptoms was she talking about?
“Transform? I have a headache and that’s it, I’ll take a painkiller and I’ll be fine by morning!” She
struggled to her feet “we are werewolves my child, you, your Father, me and everyone in this
circle!” She knew the smile would still be on her Grandmother’s face, this was a nightmare she
would wake up from with the morning “do not make it hard on yourself by resisting my child” her
Grandmother’s voice was trailing her “it is easier when you accept, I wish there was a way to
make this easier on you!” She used her hand to hold her head up as though it would fall off
without support, this was not the first headache she was getting, as she grew older, every full
moon brought a little bit of headaches and hot body temperature “painkillers will help me!” She
needed to get away from these crazy people, when she felt better tomorrow she would get her
mother and sister out of this creepy place.
