57 Adam should have stopped JJ. He should have said, I don’t think Rachel’s over there. But he didn’t know for sure. And he was so tired. Placing one foot in front of the other without tripping took almost everything he had. But those weren’t the real reasons he hadn’t stopped her. There was something else. There were things out there, things in the forest that he could almost see, but not quite—just glimpses as he walked past. Flashes. Shadows. They wanted Rachel. And it was his job to protect her. Part of him knew that he should have told JJ about them. But another part of him, a whispering part of him, said the things were easier to see without her, so didn’t that mean that JJ shouldn’t be there? That he’d have a better chance of protecting Rachel without her? Maybe, it whispered,
