36 Nice, warm day, down here close to town. He ran a hand through his hair, distributing the sweat from around his temples, before firmly settling his cap back on his head. It had been a long time, but he’d recognized her instantly. Something in the set of her shoulders, that fierce independence that, even as a little girl, had said she didn’t need anyone. That she would personally protect Adam and Danny and whoever else she chose. Silly JJ. That hadn’t been true then, and it wasn’t true now. He’d faked a stumble, used it as an excuse to head back to his car early. And then he sat there and watched her. Her and Iris. Poor Iris was looking her age today. The women spoke for a while, and JJ walked back toward her Bronco. The man started his car and swept out onto the road, turning his head away as he passed JJ and Iris. He’d already made a phone call to the police, but he still had things to take care of. Besides, he was pretty sure he knew where the women were headed. And he’d see them there soon enough.
