“And that’s why they call it Dead Hollow.” The groans of a dozen or so disappointed boys rumbled through the cool, night air. “Dude, that wasn’t even scary. You gotta have a hook if you want it to be scary,” Leslie said, demonstrating with a curled finger. The boys had gathered in a ring around the campfire, most with their hands around tucked knees. The camaraderie, the crackling hot barrier, and the presence of adults combined to make Shawn, the smallest boy in the fifth grade, unusually brave. “I don’t know, Leslie,” he said. “You looked pretty scared to me. Adam, you want to check his pants?” Adam, sitting next to Leslie, grinned but didn’t take the bait.
