A horrible cry brought her out of a sound sleep. Vicki sat upright, confused by her surroundings. The simmering embers of the fireplace, struggling to remain alive, brought her thoughts into focus. Basement. With Nicholas. In wolf form. A low but eerie wail filled the room. Heart pounding, she glanced around. She discovered Nicholas on the floor a few feet from the couch. Hunched over, he gripped his sides as he rocked back and forth, face touching the ground. “Nicholas?” She swung her legs off the couch. He cried out and pressed his forehead against the floor. Vicki staggered to his side. She reached out to touch him. Mr. Dawson’s warning caused her to hesitate. He’s changing. Stay back and let it happen.
