"You came!" I said happily cautiously widening my arms not sure if she wanted a hug.
Even though we had just met the other day, she gave me a warm hug that made my heart jump. It was more of a familiar jump, but as usual, I ignored it.
We walked back towards the log by the fire with Vince giving Alexandria a simple gesture. Alexandria then sent him an odd look as if she had sensed something was odd about him.
The three of us then sat down with an awkward silence following.
"So Alexandria, why haven't I seen you around school?" I asked.
She smiled a small one tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, "I'm kind of to myself all the time and I don't really socialize with people. Plus I'm not technically even a senior. I skipped a grade, but mama doesn't like the idea of me being in the same classes as kids who are older. So I just take advanced-junior classes so I can graduate this year"
I smirked, "So that makes you like really smart huh?"
She shrugged nervously, "I guess"
Vince chimed in, "So you're like thirteen?"
This caused Alexandria to laugh out loud, "No. I'm sixteen and I'll be seventeen the thirteenth of October"
I caught a weird chill down my spine at the mention of that date.
Weird
"Cool" the moon was beginning to fill and I then suddenly had an urge.
"Hey guys, what do you say we go exploring" I said more than cheerfully, "I mean, we're bored and this doesn't really look like anyone of our scenes. Come on, it'll be fun to travel under the light of the moon"
Alexandria shook her head, "No thanks"
I once again pushed just as I did when I had convinced her to come tonight, "Why not? The woods look fun"
Vince stifled a chuckle and shook his head, "Not these woods"
"Why not?" I whined now desperate. I didn't know why, but the urge was becoming stronger.
"Won't it be beautiful? To be out there, exploring to find new things?" Alexandria shifted uncomfortably.
"Does it have to be after the full moon? I'm supposed to be home by then. Can't we go like now or something?" She asked looking almost scared.
I didn't know what was wrong with me, but I just knew that it had to be during the full moon.
"I don't think your mom would mind you being home a little late and besides it's all the more fun without having to use some lame flashlight. I heard tonight was supposed to be the brightest of the year" I lamely excused my urge knowing that if I came out with a because I want to, i'd then get no participants.
I just felt as if there was something important that I needed to see out there, something that would help me to solve the mystery of this town.
Vince and Alexandria looked at each other as if they knew something that I hadn't which was one of the reasons I had to do this.
I felt like everyone knew something that I didn't and that was not how I wanted to begin my life here.
"Please" I said almost begging.
Vince narrowed his eyes at me for a second and Alexandria took an awkward sip from her cup.
"Okay" she said defeated, "but mama won't like this"
Vince shrugged also, "But know that this does not make us friends. I'm only doing this because if my neighbor turns up dead, my parents just might think that I had something to do with it"
I smiled confused of what he had said.
*******
The full moon came faster than I had expected. Vince, Alex, and I grouped up just as the moon turned nice and bright.
"Which way do we go first?" Alexandria's shaky voice whispered from behind.
At first, I thought to go left, but then it was like something had took over me sending me over to the right direction.
I smirked as my eyes lit up, "This way"
Vince led the way and we began to walk around.
"Tell me again why we are doing this?" He asked.
I stopped, "Because it's fun."
We continued to walk, "Yes because walking an unnecessary amount of time in hard, dirty ground is fun"
Alexandria shrugged and mumbled, "This actually isn't so bad, I don't know what mama was thinking"
I put my hand onto her shoulder and rubbed, "Told you. This is awesome."
I then began to jump around and allow the scent of the woods send me into pure bliss. Ever since I was a little kid, I loved the outside, especially the woods.
Roaming and looking around was amazing.
Alexandria giggled toward me and I took her hand as we hopped around in circles. Her pretty hair also bounced around in the moonlight causing it to glow a little.
"You have beautiful hair", I said coming to a stop and touching it.
She smiled,"Thanks"
We continued on to do our definition of exploring when Vince stopped us.
"Did you hear that?" His voice became low.
The three of us listened to the rustling of leaves coming from behind, "Maybe it's the wind or a squirrel"
The rustling of the leaves then came from our lefts, rights, and finally fronts.
I looked around frightened, "I don't think so"
The rustling noise increased as whatever was in the bushes came towards us.
I took a step back towards Alexandria as Vince put a protective arm around the two of us.
I held onto Alex's hand as she whispered, "It's the creatures"
