CHAPTER IV

NIKKI

It has been two days since the interview took place. I still await my letter of acceptance. Today was the D-day.The day I have been waiting for.

The day my life was at a turning point. The day that anything that happens decides my future. I was really scared and anxious.

I don't know how things would turn out. I kept thinking about what I would do if I never got the job. Millions of questions flooded my mind as I kept thinking about the job.

I kept asking myself questions, but the most annoying thing was, I had an answer to every damn question I kept asking myself.

' Would he not give me the job? He should as he doesn't have any other person than me that applied for the post.'

' Would he use it to seek revenge on me for all the insult I said to him? No, he's too handsome to do that.'

' Would he over work me when I start working with him? No, he looks like someone with a bloody heart.'

' Would he always get on my nerves and ask me to do the impossible? No, he looks nice to ever do such a thing to me.'

As I kept asking myself questions, I had a reply for every single question. I don't even know if the replies I gave to my own very questions are true. But the possibility of it been true is very high.

It all seems positive, but why the heck i'm I worried?

I answer based on assumption. I tried to remain calm by making my mind wander somewhere else. Nothing seems to help. I decided to call Ruby.

Ruby is my best friend since high school. After our first meeting, we became inseparable. Even thought we have contrasting behaviors, we had a lot in common.

We shared our fears, problems and thoughts with each other. Whenever we fought, we talk it out by having an heart-to-heart talk as soon as possible. Its what best friends do..... I guess

We don't keep grudges. We always had each other's back, protecting each other. We talked about almost everything and anything.

Ruby was the social type, everyone love her. Ruby has a boyfriend, his name is Stephen. They had been dating since high school. Crazy, right?

Their relationship lasted for long but were actually built on lies all this time thanks to her boyfriend. But recently, Ruby kept complaining about Stephen, expected!

She always in tears when ever she talks about issues she had with him. It got to a point that they had to break up, since he cheated on her. But Ruby doesn't agree and kept saying she loved Stephen so much.

She kept saying she can't forget about him that easily and she won't be able to love someone else like she loved Stephen. I have always thought ' girl, its high time you broke up. Why go through all that pain!', but it makes me look like I'm too heartless. Maybe I am......

Their story could be written as a book. It's a long, boring and a very complicated one.That aside. I had to talk to her.

Normally when I call her, she's always whining about something Stephen did, but this time around, she sounded stressed. I can see that she also has something to say to me.

But she seem like she didn't want to talk about it over the phone. She still told me, anyways.

I knew right away that if I told her about my problem, she would go out of line this time.

She could say something about my boss-to-be having feeling for me, but I already plan on telling her none of what she's thinking would happen.But a part of me actually want it to be true. I wonder why?

Can you imagine? Silly me. If she ever find out I have feeling for my future boss, she's going to keep teasing me. Ruby teasing is really extreme. Thinking about the past makes me shiver.

' Hey Ruby, how are you?'

' Hello Nikki, I'm fine. What about you?'

' I'm fine. You sound like you're stressed about something. Tell me what happened.'

' You know me too well. But, in know you're also stressed about something. Don't tell me you are stressed about your interview?'

' Why else would I be like this then? Before we talk about me, let's talk about you. I think yours deserves immediate discussion.'

' Ok Nikki what ever you say. So here's what happened. Can you believe that for the first time, after so many years of dating Stephen, he asked me out on a proper and romantic date?'

' He did? I'm sure it feels to good to be true'

' Exactly Nikki, you know, this is part of what I always complain about. We never had a proper date and he always stood me up. But I kept thinking, why does it feel different from the other date we had gone?'

' May be he want to make up for he's passing mistake. But why after so many years of being together? Is he insane? I'm actually having doubt's thinking he came to his senses.'

' I kept wondering too. I'm scared Nikki. I'm afraid he's trying to end our relationship. You know what, the last time he asked me out on a date of this kind, even though it was long ago, do you know what he told me?'

' What did he say? I'm not a good guesser and you know it.'

' He said we should take a break from each other.'

' He what? Ruby! How dare he do that to you? No wonder he stood you up every single time you had a date. He doesn't have the guts to face you'

' Yeah, maybe. But I know you are wondering why I never told you. It was recently, a month ago though. I'm sorry for not telling you.'

' Its fine. But i'm a little angry you didn't tell me. You're forgiven. I'm so sorry to hear that. That means, this date is to probably tell you something unpleasant. How long would you keep putting up with his awful attitude Ruby. Let's try to be positive.'

' What if he really wants to make up and turn a new leaf?'

' I doubt it Ruby. Someone like him, I don't think he can change.'

' Nikki! You said we should be positive.'

' I know, but from what you've told me and what you're always telling, I don't think him inviting you for this special dinner would be any different. Probably another sad news.He already made a fool out of you big time! I'm sorry if that hurt your feelings. But why do you keep standing up for him?

I know you'll say you still love him, have you ever thought about thinking if he has ever loved you or he's just dating you because of your family's wealth and the inheritance you are entitled to.

Have you ever thought of your relationship in terms of this perspective?'

' No Nikki, I haven't.'

' Well Ruby, it's high time you did. I'm sorry for the harsh words I said. Just be careful. No one knows what the future holds. People change!'

' It's okay Nikki. I know you said all that stuff because you care. I'll try seeing our relationship from that perspective. Thank you.'

' You're welcome Ruby. You know right, that I want the best for you. So as I was saying let's see how things turn out. If he hurt you this time, I'll do what I have always wanted to do a long time ago.'

' What's that Nikki?'

' Torture him till death for hurting my best friend. I've always wanted to do it.'

' well then, if he ever hurt me Nikki, you have the permission. Now, let's talk about you. I feel better now.'

' Right, about my job. The thing is..... Some one is ringing the bell. I have to answer it. I'll call you back. Call me back at night will you?'

' Sure I'm really excited to hear it. Best of luck with you result.'

' Thanks Ruby. Bye.'

' Bye Nikki. '

I ran downstairs all the way from my room. I stopped right in front of the door. I decide to look through the hole on the door to see who would visit me by this time.

It's almost evening. Who on Earth would visit by this time? I don't have friends here.

To my surprise, it was the mail man standing with two packages.

I opened the door to receive the two packages brought for me. I signed on the paper he handed over to me and returned it to him.

I thanked him and closed the door behind me.

I rushed to the table nearest to me to place the packages on it. I stepped away from the packages wondering, who would send me a package.

One looks formal and the other looks informal. I was reluctant to open both packages.

When I finally did, what I saw inside both packages left my mouth agape.

One made me happy and the other made me...... a little bit sad. I don't even know what to think of it right now. So many emotions rushing through me, while staring at the other package. So many memories kept flashing before my eyes....
