Chapter Two: First day back

1025 Words
After Jane had arrived a slow but steady stream of costumers began coming in, everyone welcomed me back from my 'vacation'. Jane and I worked effortlessly through out the morning keeping the shop clean and restocking treats so we were never low. A little after noon I let Jane take her lunch and I kept the costumers coming and going, a few had even placed orders for dinner parties and a couple of ladies came in to set up appointments with me to do cake tastings for weddings. There was a lull in the day so I took the opportunity to place out all the baked goods in hopes they would all sell before I closed at 5 which was in just a few short hours away. About 30 minutes after Jane came back from her lunch the costumers picked up again and all the goods flew off the shelves. Nearing 4:30 Jane began wiping the counters and tables down while I picked up a broom and swept the tiled floors. We had one or two more costumers who came and they took everything that was left in the display cases. When 5 o'clock hit both Jane and I collapsed into the chair at the back of the shop with cups of coffee in our hands, mine full of caffeine since I still had some stuff to do. We drank from our cups in peace and quiet while we relaxed from the day, there wasn't any point in the day where there wasn't at least one costumer in so we had been on the move and these few moments we took right now had been much needed.      "Alright pretty lady I am gonna get going," Jane said as she got up from her seat and come over to give me a hug goodbye, I thanked her again and double kissed her cheeks. As soon as she left, I double checked the locked doors and went on with my routine of getting the baked goods for tomorrow pre-mixed. My first step was turning the music I already had on a bit louder and fix the bun that was falling out of my hair. The rest of the routine flowed as I grabbed everything I needed. By 7 o'clock I had everything prepped for the next day. I smiled to myself and cleaned up so I didn't leave a mess to deal with early in the morning. As soon as I was done with cleaning I put my apron in the dirty pile and hung clean ones on the rack, I usually wait to wash all the dirties until the basket is full which takes 2 or 3 days. I turned all the lights off and walked out the back door turning around to lock it before walking the few feet to my truck. On my way home I stopped into the 24 hour grocery store and shopped for some groceries that would hold me off until the weekend when I could run more of my errands when I had then shop closed. Since it was just Jane and I, I had decided to only have the shop open up Monday Through Friday with the occasional weekends but that was usually during the busier seasons. It was easier for both of us this way since we both still tried to keep lives outside of work, even though now I really had nothing else. For the last month I had put a lot of my energy into making new recipes and having Tommy and His wife over to try them all, while I was on my 'vacation'. As I walked through the aisles placing simple things in my cart, I started thinking about the tall and handsome man that was Morgan Reed. He hadn't showed back up to the shop today to talk even though I kind of left the invitation open for whenever, and I really really hoped he would come back around.      I finished my grocery trip fairly quickly and made it back out to my truck putting the few bags in the back seat. A glance at the clock on my dash read out 8 pm. I had just enough time to get home eat  and shower before bed. The drive to my house was about 30 minutes long, I lived just outside of town down the highway on a 400 acre plot of land. Back when my parents still owned it my dad had raised cattle and my mom grew  vegetables for the farmers market in town. Now since it was just me I sold off the last remaining head of cattle to a neighboring ranch and rented out the pastures on my property to him so he could run all of the cattle. I kept the vegetable garden and produced some things but the stuff I grew was more herbs that I used in my baking then all of the amazing veggies my mother grew. Pulling under the old wooden ranch sign I drove the short distance on the gravel road to my two story house and opened the garage using the built in button on the dash of my truck. Parking inside the big garage I used the wall panel to close up and carried my bags through the door that lead into the laundry room and then beyond that into the kitchen. Putting away all the groceries except for the makings of a salad, I ate in peace after putting it together. By the time I was full, my body felt tired, the long day finally catching up. I shut off all the lights and headed upstairs to get ready for bed. When I was finally ready for bed I laid down and turned my alarm on. I laid there for a few minutes thinking about the rest of the week and designing the new menu in my head for the fall season. In my head I pictured the shop covered in fall decorations and all my fall inspired treats in my head before finally falling asleep to the sounds of the night outside of my window.
