Chapter Twenty-eight: Doctors

    The next morning Melinda and I got to my doctors appointment a little early. She sat with me as I filled out the paperwork. When I was done I got up and took it back to the nurse at the desk, then returned to my seat. We started talking about where we were gonna go shopping after and we made a little list. After about 15 minutes my name was called. We followed the nurse back, she weighed me and checked my blood pressure. Then she left us in an exam room where I changed into the weird hospital gown. Melinda was to into something on her phone while I changed. While we waited for the doctor to come in Melinda was telling me about when she was pregnant with Morgan. It was keeping me occupied and I wasn't worrying. There was a knock on the door and Melinda got up to answer. She hugged the person who was dressed in a nice white doctors coat. 

   "Hello Arizona, I'm Dr. Allison Reed," she said with a sweet smile. "I also happen to be Melindas niece." 

   "Nice to meet you," I said, I was a little squirmy now, being that I was freaked out.

   "No need to worry, I'm not gonna say anything, " She patted my arm.

    "Okay, I'm sorry I'm nervous a bit." I said playing with my hands in my lap.

   "That completely normal, so before we get started are you comfortable with Melinda staying in here?" She asked me.

    "Yes, I am," I smiled at Melinda who had a smile on her face.

   "Let's get started then," she pulled the computer from the wall and pulled up my file. "So first question, first day of your last period?" 

   "November 25," I answered.

   "When were you last sexually active?" 

    "November 24 and before that was either the last weekend of September or right at the beginning of october."

    "Okay, so how have you been feeling?" 

    We went back and forth her asking the questions and me answering. Melinda wasn't paying much attention she just sat next to me holding my hand and playing on her phone. 

   "Alright I think its time we took a look and see," she smiled and moved a machine closer to me. "Now this is gonna be a bit weird, for you since you shouldn't be to far along, instead of an ultrasound we will need to do a sonogram," Allison said and I nodded. After taking the home pregnancy test the other day I did a research about what to expect for the first drs visit. Allison helped me lean back on the hospital bed and she helped me situate my feet in stirrups, you would think it would be uncomfortable having someone stare at you done there but it actually wasn't. She pulled out a long rod looking thing and put a jelly on it. I closed my eyes taking deep breathes to relax. When she got it in it was a tad bit uncomfortable she moved it around a little then said look and pointed to the screen. There on a screen was a little blip moving, she pressed a button and a woosh sound filled the room along with a very fast beat. Melinda squeezed my hand and smiled big with tears in her eyes and seeing her tears made mine fall. I was crying as I listened to my babies heart beat. Allison hit a few more buttons and then she used a cursor to measure the blip. 

   "So from the looks of the size of the fetus you are about 4 weeks which matches what you told me exactly. Now your due date right now is..." she looked at a calender and did some math " August 25, but that could change." She smiled.

   "Thank you Allison." I said through my tears. 

   "No problem so I'm going to go get you some prenatal vitamins to take and something that will help with the nausea, then on your way out I want you to schedule some more appointments with me okay?" She said and I nodded. She left the room and Melinda took my hands in hers.

   "Sweetie, you and my boy are making me a grandmother and I couldn't be more happy and proud that it is you," she smiled and kissed my cheek. I got up to get dressed and I laid the hospital gown on the bed. When Allison came back she handed me a bag and an envelope. 

   "So there's your vitamins, and I also printed out a couple pictures of the sonogram for you I figured you'd want them," she chuckled and I smiled.

   "You are absolutely correct, its my baby first picture." I said and laughed.

   "Alright I will see you next month okay?" She said and I nodded, Melinda and I walked out and to the front desk for me to make my next appointment. I ended up setting up the next 3 and then we left. Heading out for our next big adventure of the day, which was shopping. 

   By the time we were done shopping I had a couple new outfits that would grow with me as I started showing more in the next few month, I didn't want to buy maternity clothing just yet and I even bought Morgan some new shirts and shorts. I even found the tiniest pair of cowboy boots that I bought so I could use them and the sonogram to announce it to Morgan on Friday. Melinda dropped me back off at my house when we were all done and I went in to hide the baby boots until I needed them. I wasn't sure when Morgan would be back over before Friday so it was better to hide them now then later. I kept the sonogram in my purse though I for sure didn't want to lose that. I went into the kitchen and got a cup of water so I could take my vitamins. Allison said to take the medicine for my nausea first thing in the mornings so I figured I could deal with morning sickness one more night.
