The Mission

1234 Words
Maxine   A mission?  I stare back at my mothers eyes and narrow my own a bit. "What did you have in mind?" I answered back as cold as possible. She wants to be a bit of a b***h? Well guess what, I can play that game too. Father seems to catch onto our stare down and clears his throat. "Max," he used my nickname whenever he tried to diffuse a situation, "we have new intelligence that Alpha Rick of the Blackwater pack has stepped down and gave the pack to his son, Jayce Evans." New Alpha huh? This grabbed my attention. Father noticed my spike in curiosity and stood up and motioned me to walk with him to the projector on the other side of the table.  "Brian, pull up the pictures we have of him." He asked to the knight on the left of him.  "Yes your majesty. I will take a few minutes to log in and project the pictures." He replied quickly. He immediately turned to the computer, sat down and started logging in. Father looked at me and started to pace. "The mission that I am requiring you to go on will need to be completed in 2 days time before the moon rises. Anything later than that will be considered a failure." 2 days? Why 2 days? That's... He looked the unspoken question on my face and continued. "Yes Max, I understand that your birthday is also in 2 days. I apologize for that but this is a very important mission. Jayce is still relatively young as he is only 18 but it is rumored that he is still powerful. Even more powerful than his father." Father said with a bit of disgust in his mouth.   The sound of the projector started to come to life and father took that as a sign to start sharing information about this so-called alpha with me. "Here are a few photos our surveillance team has been able to recover from following the pack to one of the neighboring human cities. Here is your target Max," He looked at me and pointed, "This is Jayce Evans." He said as the photos began to shine on the white wall behind us.   My throat went dry and my eyes were glued to the picture and I was unable to look away. The pictures showed him at many different angles, each more beautiful than the last. The man in the picture was pure perfection to me. He was tan, with jet black hair and pearly white teeth that complimented the killer smile he had. His eyes were a deep honey brown color. He was tall and looked to be about 6ft tall, close to my fathers height. His build had just the right amount of muscle, enough to show he had them but not too much that it looked unnatural. He was wearing a black muscle tee that showed off his tattooed chest, arms and neck that were covered in beautiful artwork. He was wearing black shorts that showed off his muscular legs. Yummy. So, this is Jayce huh? Too bad he was a werewolf! He is so damn godly! This isn't fair! Maybe after I kill him I can find a human boy like this in the city. Someone like this cannot be THAT hard to find. After the mission I shou-..." Maxine!" Mother screeched at the top of her lungs. I was pulled out of my daydream and snapped my neck at her. "Did you hear anything that was said or were you not paying attention!?" She glared at me and my father was also looking at me coldly. Oh s**t. I calmly looked back at the picture and answered as if I was unaffected. "Of course I was. I was thinking of how many Hunters to bring with me. If he's anything like you said he is, he may be a problem. I'm sorry for the interruption, please continue." I looked at my father and nodded that he had my full attention. He glanced at me for a half second longer before nodding himself. "As I was saying, Jayce is unmated. Which is a good thing for us. He hasn't unleashed his full power yet because of this. So now is the time to strike him down and erase him from this world."  I felt a pain in my chest. A world without Jayce? The thought hurt me for a split second but I quickly threw it to the side. Hunters have no emotion. These creatures shouldn't exist in this world. They deserved death. As I was dealing with my own internal dilemma, I failed to see father staring at me. "Maxine." He said cold and without emotion. My body tensed up and my heart started to quicken. He slowly started to circle me with his arms behind his back. From the corner of my eye I saw my mother start to smirk. "Who are you?" He said without emotion. No soul. This was the beginning of our mantra. The same mantra that we have said everyday before I was given my medicine since I was small to remind me that I was a killer. I was death personified. I felt by body start to react on its own. My emotions were pulled from my body and I became empty. I became a supernatural hunter. I became stone. “I am no one.”   Father kept circling me in a very slow pace. My heart started to quiet down. My body loosened up from it's tensed up state as it focused on his words. I was indeed no one. If my identity was ever uncovered by their world, I would be used as a hostage.  "What is your purpose in life?" My purpose was to serve my King and Queen until my very last breath and exterminate their enemies. I am death.  "To kill all supernatural creatures."  The circling continued and I was hyper focused on his voice that held power over me.  "What happens if you are caught by their kind?" I will not allow myself to be caught by those creatures. I was the best at what I did and even though I was sure that my face was memorized by all assassins on the supernatural side, I would fight and take out as many of those vile creatures as possible. I felt a rage burn inside me. A fire that was reignited from our mantra. But if I were to be caught, I know what I could do. "... I stay silent until they kill me." I felt the circling stop.  I feel power inside of me but also felt my heart turn cold and ice over. I recall the countless faces that I have killed and none affected me. My emotions were gone and all that was left was a darkened soul. "So, Maxine, my dear daughter, will you kill Jayce?" Mothers calm voice asked? "Yes Mother. When do I leave?" "Tonight. I will have the plans ready for you by dusk." I hear two sets of footsteps leave me alone in the dining room. My head that was once hanging is now upright and staring daggers at the alpha. My internal dilemma was gone." Jayce, no hard feelings but, you don't belong in this world." I start heading to my room to get my things set for tonight.
