Kennedy POV The weekend flew by in a haze of nerves and unease. Sunday afternoon, we were all seated around the kitchen table—Dad, Helen, Dominic and I. I didn’t touch the tea Helen made, and Dominic just sat back in the chair, arms crossed over his chest, jaw clenched like he was bracing for bad news. Helen cleared her throat gently. “We spoke with the hospital this morning… Mr. Beckett survived.” My breath caught. Dad leaned forward, eyes dark and stormy. “But just barely.” Helen continued, glancing between Dominic and me. “He has severe brain damage. He’s completely blind in one eye, partially blind in the other. His sinus cavity and nose had to be completely reconstructed. Dislocated jaw. Twenty-four missing or shattered teeth.
