A Deal with theDevil

Naomi barely made it into the hallway before the weight of what she had just done crashed over her. She had bluffed her way into a meeting with Damian Everett. And he bought it. Or at least, he hadn't called security to throw her out. Yet. Her legs trembled as she hit the button for the elevator, her mind replaying every second of the last thirty minutes. The way Damian had leaned forward, analyzing her work with the intensity of a man used to owning the room. The sharp, knowing glint in his gaze every time she spoke. He knew. Maybe not the full extent of the lie, but he knew something was off. And yet, he had let her speak. Let her challenge him. Let her walk away without calling her bluff. Why? The elevator doors slid open, and she stepped inside, pressing against the cool metal wall as the doors sealed her in. Breathe, Naomi. Breathe. This was supposed to be the end of the mistake. She would go home, pretend this never happened, and never step foot in Everett Tower again. The number on the elevator panel ticked down. Forty-nine. Forty-eight. Her phone vibrated in her pocket. A text. Unknown Number: Come back. Now. Her stomach dropped. No. No, no, no. She checked the number again, but there was no name. As if summoned by her panic, the elevator stopped. The doors slid open— And standing there, blocking the exit, was a very familiar figure. Damian Everett. His tall frame cast a shadow against the gleaming marble floor, his expression unreadable. Naomi’s pulse skyrocketed. "I—" "You walked out without answering my question." His voice was smooth, controlled. Dangerous. "What question?" she managed. Damian tilted his head slightly. "Who are you, Naomi Carter?" Panic curled like smoke in her chest. He knew. She should confess. Should end this before it spiraled completely out of control. Instead— "You called me back just to ask that?" she said, forcing a calm she didn’t feel. His lips twitched—just slightly. "You’re either incredibly reckless," he mused, "or exactly what I need." Naomi blinked. "What?" "I’ve spent three months watching overpaid designers feed me half-baked ideas that barely scratch the surface of what my company needs," he said, stepping closer. "And then you walk in—uninvited, completely unqualified—and present something real. Something my team should have figured out months ago." He took another step. She could feel the heat of him now, the sheer gravity of his presence. "I don’t trust you," he said, voice lower now, more dangerous. "But I do need someone who can think outside the walls of my company. Someone who can challenge me." Her breath caught. "You think that’s me?" His lips curved slightly. "I think you’re a liar." Her stomach twisted. "But," he continued, his gaze sharp, calculating, "I also think you’re a liar with potential." Naomi exhaled sharply. "I—I don’t understand. Are you offering me a job?" A slow, deliberate nod. Her heart stopped. This wasn’t real. It couldn’t be real. "You can walk out now," Damian said. "Pretend this never happened. I won’t stop you." Her throat went dry. "Or," he continued, his eyes darkening, "you can stay. Show me that you’re more than just a lucky mistake." Silence stretched between them. Naomi’s pulse pounded. This was insane. She didn’t belong here. Didn’t belong in his world. But something deep inside her whispered—why not? What if this was her chance? Her one shot at breaking free of the life that had always kept her small? She lifted her chin. "I’ll stay." Damian’s lips curled—just slightly. "Good," he murmured. Then— "Don’t make me regret it." Chapter Three: Three hours later, Naomi sat in the back of a sleek, black town car as it pulled up in front of an exclusive, members-only gala. Damian’s voice echoed in her mind. "If you're going to work for me, you need to understand my world. And I need to see if you can survive it." As she stepped out onto the glittering pavement, she realized— This wasn’t just a test. It was a trap.
