Chapter 6 : THE HARVEST FESTIVAL

702 Words
Valmare’s almond harvest festival has arrived and in full swing,a celebration of community, renewal and love. The scent of roasted corn and cinnamon drifted through the autumn air, mixing with laughter and the rustle of leaves.Banners in shades of orange, burgundy and gold, fluttered above the village square, where booths lined the cobbled paths.Children raced with caramel apples, musicians played soft folk tunes, and lanterns began to glow like stars waiting for dusk. Elena tightened her scarf and clutched a steaming cup of cider as she wandered past the familiar stalls. It had been years since she’d left the village.Life in the city had pulled her away, but the passing of her mother-who had once been the heart of the festival committee-had called her back. The festival hadn’t changed much.Neither had the people. The same handmade quilt raffle. The same pumpkin carving contest by the old fellas. And standing in the same booth as always-carving names into wooden keychains. Elena volunteered to paint a mural on the huge tree, choosing an image of the almond tree with two figures beneath it. As the festival lights glowed and music filled the air,Luca came,he hadn’t seen her yet.His sleeves were rolled up, and a dusting of sawdust clung to his shirt. His hands moved with careful precision, the way she remembered. She used to tease him for spending more time with wood than with people, but he’d always say, “Wood doesn’t lie.it tells you where it needs to be.” Back then he was just a boy in love, her best friend. The one who taught her to drive stick. They stood in silence for a moment, the world moving around them-children’s laughter, fiddles playing,a burst of cheers from the pie-eating contest. “I’m sorry about your mother,” he said gently. Elena nodded. “She would have loved this year’s turnout.” “She would‘ve loved seeing you back too.” She sipped her cider, letting the warmth calm her nerves. “I’m not sure anyone would remember me.” “I remembered,”he said simply. “You want to walk?”he asked, gesturing toward the lantern path that led to the hayfields. She nodded. They strolled through the festival, the glow of string lights making the world feel softer.kids danced around fire pit, teenagers clutched warm donuts, and couples leaned into each other on hay bales.Autumn had painted everything golden. “Do you still have the necklace?”he asked. Elena looked at him sideways. “The wooden leaf?” “Yeah.” She smiled. “I still wear it when I miss home.” They stopped at the edge of the field, where the lanterns ended and the stars began. Luca looked up at the sky. “You had dreams bigger than this town.Bigger than me.I wouldn’t have wanted to be the reason you had stayed.” Elena looked at him, really looked at him. “You wouldn’t have been the reason I wanted to stay,Luca. But you are one of the reason I came back.” His eyes met hers, something old and tender flickering there. “You are here now.” She nodded. He stepped closer. “I’m still here, still wishing.” Her heart fluttered the way it used to when they were teenagers, lying under the same sky, wondering about the future. She chased city lights, new jobs, and louder lives-but nothing ever felt quite like this:simple, slow, true. “I thought of you every time I passed a woodshop,”she said softly. “Every autumn, I’d wish I was here.” Luca took her hand.it felt like home. “Stay for the bonfire,”he said. “Dance with me.” “I haven’t danced in years.” “Neither have I,”he whispered. “ But I would like to dance with you.” Elena laughed, the sound catching in the night like a spark. “Okay,” she said. As they walked back toward the glowing heart of the festival, the scent of pine smoke and cinnamon filled the air.A slow song played near the bonfire, and Luca pulled her gently into the circle of his arms. They swayed, surrounded by light and laughter, lost in the warmth of each other. No promises. No pressure.Just the quiet understanding that sometimes, love waits in the roots of the place you leave-until you find your way back.
