“Are there any other questions?”
Kara’s question brought Bernanos back to reality. He handed the phone back to Kara and showed a friendly smile, hinting at her to look in Gilbert’s direction: poor Gilbert was running around like a headless fly, trying to set up poles to seal off the scene.
“Thank you for your cooperation. For the rest of the questions, we’ll have to trouble you to come to the police station with us. That’s my colleague, Gilbert. He’ll bring you there. Hey, Gilbert!”
Just as Gilbert was wrestling with the poles, he heard his name being called and subconsciously turned his head. When he saw Bernanos and Kara looking at him, he hurriedly swallowed his saliva and waved his hand back, only to almost break the almost set up poles.
“Don’t mind how he looks,” Bernanos turned to look at Kara and smiled, showing off his white teeth confidently as he put his hand on her back, leading her towards the police car.
“He’s the future star of our police station. As long as you’re with him, you won’t have to worry. Hey, Gilbert, take this woman to the police station and conduct a normal record of events.”
Gilbert was still busy arranging the isolation poles. It wasn’t until Bernanos finished speaking that he seemed to suddenly wake up, hurriedly setting the poles down and opening the backseat door.
Bernanos pacified Kara with a few sentences before taking her to the backseat and closing the car door.
Gilbert was just about to get into the driver’s seat when Bernanos reached out and grabbed his collar, pulling Gilbert in front of him.
“Her name’s Kara and she had a one-time s*x deal with the deceased. Afterwards, they lost contact. According to her, the deceased is called Kevin and suddenly showed up in front of her house today, wanting to start a relationship with her.
She didn’t agree and the deceased killed himself. She doesn’t seem to be suspicious, but you can’t let your guard down. When you go back, chat with her and ask her things like how she feels about the deceased’s death.”
Gilbert hastily nodded. Bernanos gave his head a slap before pushing him into the driver’s seat.
The police car drove off. Bernanos turned around and surveyed the bustling crowd, “Hey John, hurry up and go home with the kid! After that, tell me what you saw.”
In the car, Gilbert drove while Kara sat in the back silently.
Gilbert was paying attention to the road, but from time to time, he would sneak a glance at Kara’s face.
Although her looks weren’t lacking, her soaked hair and brows made her seem extra hard. Her thin, sharp lips added to her cold aura.
“Um… there’s a towel behind the headrest.” Gilbert licked his lips, nervously breaking the silence, “It’s just been washed, so if you don’t mind, you can use it to dry yourself.”
“Thank you.” Kara found the towel and started to dry off with it.
Gilbert casually made conversation with Kara, “I heard Bernanos say he killed himself. Do you know why the deceased did that?”
Kara shook her head, “I’m not sure.”
“You look very calm.” Gilbert saw Kara look at him and immediately knew he misspoke, “Oh, I’m sorry! I didn’t mean anything, I just thought it was rare for somebody to be so calm when something like that happened right in front of them-”
Kara wasn’t upset and just smiled bitterly, “I studied medicine in undergrad.”
Gilbert immediately connected her cold aura to the icy feeling in hospitals and suddenly seemed to understand, “No wonder.”
At the scene of the investigation.
The clean-up crew dispatched by the police had just arrived to take care of the body.
At some point, Bernanos had found a raincoat and was asking an old lady with an umbrella about the situation.
“You said the deceased was here at noon?”
“That’s right! I was cooking when I saw a big, tall person hanging around in front of that woman’s door. He was wearing a hood and acting weirdly, but I didn’t give it much thought. A young man hovering near a young woman’s door wasn’t anything to make a fuss about.”
“What about Kara? She’s the woman that lives there.”
“She spent the whole day at school. She seems to be doing some experiments right now. She usually only returns in the afternoon or evening.”
In the police station.
Gilbert took Kara to sit inside a room before preparing hot water and a new blanket for her.
Kara was far calmer than how others would be in her situation. However, considering her educational background, it made sense.
She answered all of Gilbert’s questions, then took the initiative to mention she had confronted Kevin with a gun. After that, she offered to help and provide all the proof that she could.
While Gilbert was preparing to report to Bernano, the investigative team locked in on Kevin’s identity: he was a local prostitute, 32 years old, original name Juan Schmidt. He had already been arrested for disturbing peace and public order twice.
The police contacted Juan Schmidt’s colleague who had been arrested with him earlier and found Juan’s roommate. The roommate said Juan seemed to be ill recently. He had stopped receiving customers and spent all day muttering weird stuff.
Gilbert reported everything to Bernano, who was still on the scene. Bernano pondered for a moment before ordering Gilbert to get Kara’s signature on the recording as well as her contact information. After that, he could let Kara leave.
Gilbert followed Bernano’s orders before kindly asking Kara if she wanted him to send her home.
Kara thought for a moment before refusing, saying she still had work to do and wanted to go back to the school.
It wasn’t until she had left the police department that Kara relaxed her previously tense nerves. She no longer controlled her pace, speeding up until she was nearly running towards the school.
Kara knew something had to be wrong with her.
Because the moment she saw the blood flowing out of Kevin’s head, what she felt wasn’t fear, but an intense feeling of hunger.
