Chapter 8- Where Silence Finally Break

1242 Words
Belle POV Belle didn’t go to class. She walked past it. Past the door. Past the voices. Past the version of herself that usually sat by the window, quiet and untouched. Her steps didn’t slow. Didn’t hesitate. Didn’t think. Because thinking meant remembering. And remembering— Was the one thing she couldn’t survive right now. The school gates blurred behind her. The noise faded. The world shifted from crowded hallways and suffocating stares to something quieter. Lonelier. The road stretched ahead, leading out of the city. Outskirts. Somewhere no one would follow. Or so she thought. --- Ethan POV He knew something was wrong. Not just “off.” Not just “different.” Wrong. The moment she walked past him—like he didn’t exist—he felt it again. That same emptiness. But now? It had direction. She wasn’t just drifting. She was going somewhere. And Ethan— Without thinking. Without questioning it. Followed. At a distance. Far enough that she wouldn’t notice. Close enough that he wouldn’t lose her. He didn’t call out. Didn’t try to stop her. Didn’t even fully understand why he was doing this. Only that something in him refused to let her disappear like that. Not again. --- Belle POV The river came into view slowly. Wide. Still. Quiet in a way that felt heavier than silence. The outskirts of the city rarely saw people. Especially not during school hours. That’s why she came here. That’s why her feet had brought her here without asking. Because this place— Didn’t demand anything from her. Didn’t expect her to pretend. Belle walked closer, her steps slowing as she reached the edge. The water reflected the sky, calm and endless. Too calm. Too endless. Her chest tightened. Her hands trembled slightly at her sides. And then— She sank. Knees hitting the ground, fingers pressing into the dirt like she needed something to hold onto. Something real. Because everything inside her— Was slipping. Her breathing hitched. Once. Twice. Then broke completely. A sound tore out of her throat— Raw. Uncontrolled. A sob. Loud. Painful. Real. “No—” Her voice cracked instantly, shaking under the weight of something she had been holding in for too long. “No… no…” Her head dropped, hands clutching her hair as her shoulders shook violently. “I wish… I wish I wasn’t there…” The words came out between broken breaths, barely forming, barely holding together. “I wish I didn’t see it…” Another sob ripped through her, louder this time. “I wish I did something—” Her voice shattered. “He would still be alive—!” Silence swallowed the last word. But the echo of it lingered. Heavy. Devastating. Belle bent forward, her forehead almost touching the ground as her entire body trembled. “I should’ve done something…” Her voice dropped into a broken whisper. “I should’ve… I should’ve—” But the sentence never finished. Because there was nothing left to say. Nothing that could undo it. Nothing that could fix it. Her cries filled the empty space around her, raw and unfiltered in a way no one had ever seen before. This was the part she hid. The part no one was allowed to witness. The part that made everything else make sense. --- Ethan POV He froze. Not when she stopped. Not when she dropped to her knees. But when he heard her. That sound— It wasn’t crying. It wasn’t just sadness. It was something deeper. Something broken beyond repair. Ethan stood a few steps away, hidden just enough behind a tree, his body completely still. Because suddenly— Moving felt wrong. Breathing felt loud. Everything felt like it would shatter the moment if he did anything at all. “I wish I did something… he would still be alive…” The words echoed in his head. Over. And over. And over again. Alive. His jaw tightened slightly. Something shifted inside him. Fast. Sharp. Pieces clicking together in a way he hadn’t expected. That emptiness in her eyes. That detachment. That “it’s easier not to feel anything.” It wasn’t nothing. It wasn’t attitude. It was guilt. Grief. Something she was carrying alone. Something heavy enough to hollow her out from the inside. Ethan swallowed slowly, his gaze fixed on her trembling figure. She looked— Small. Not physically. But in a way that made everything around her seem too big. Too much. Like she was being crushed under something invisible. And for the first time— Ethan didn’t feel irritated. Didn’t feel challenged. Didn’t feel the need to push. He felt— Helpless. The realization hit harder than he expected. Because Ethan wasn’t used to that. Wasn’t used to standing there and not knowing what to do. Not knowing how to fix something. Not knowing how to control the situation. But this? This wasn’t something he could control. And somehow— That bothered him more than anything else. --- Belle POV Her cries didn’t stop. They came in waves. Strong. Unrelenting. Each one pulling something deeper out of her. “I didn’t move…” Her voice trembled violently. “I just stood there…” Her hands tightened into fists against the ground. “I just watched…” Another sob broke through. “I could’ve helped… I could’ve done something…” Her breathing became uneven again, almost frantic. “But I didn’t—” Her voice dropped into a whisper so quiet it barely existed. “And now he’s gone…” The words hung in the air. Final. Unchangeable. Belle’s shoulders shook as the weight of it crushed down on her all over again. Like it never left. Like it never would. --- Ethan POV He couldn’t listen to this and stay the same. That much he knew. Something inside him— Shifted. Quietly. But permanently. Because the girl he thought he understood? The one he thought was just cold, distant, untouchable— She wasn’t any of those things. She was breaking. Right in front of him. And no one else even knew. Ethan exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair as his gaze softened—just slightly. Not enough for anyone else to notice. But enough to matter. “…damn it, Belle…” he muttered under his breath. There was no plan forming in his head. No clever move. No strategy. Just one thought. Clear. Unavoidable. He couldn’t leave her like this. But for once— Ethan didn’t move immediately. Didn’t step forward. Didn’t interrupt. Because something told him— This moment? It wasn’t his to take. So he stayed where he was. Watching. Listening. Understanding. And for the first time— Not trying to win. --- Third POV The river remained still. Unchanging. As Belle cried beside it, her pain finally breaking through the walls she had built so carefully. And just a few steps away— Unseen. Unnoticed. Ethan stood in silence. His expression no longer irritated. No longer amused. No longer curious. But something else entirely. Something heavier. Something real. And as her sobs slowly softened into quiet, broken breaths— Ethan made a decision. Not out loud. Not dramatic. But firm. Certain. He wasn’t going to let her carry this alone anymore. Even if she hated him for it. Even if she pushed him away. Even if she tried to disappear again. This time— He would follow.
