That night, she went to Zamond's place, but he wasn't back yet.
Evianne sat cross-legged on her shoulder bag and lowered her head to attentively play a mobile game.
The elevator door slid open with a 'ding'. Zamond walked out, kneading his eyebrows, a hint of tiredness on his face.
At the sight of Evianne, he halted in confusion.
His immediate reaction was to suspect that he had gotten the wrong floor.
His dashing brows furrowed as his eyes appraised Evianne and the shopping bags beside her.
Evianne killed the last monster, quit the game contentedly, lifted her head and smiled, "You're back."
With that she attempted to rise to her feet only to find her legs numb from the long sitting.
She cursed under her breath, braced her hand against the wall and managed to steady herself.
The searing pain in her feet made her face crumple. She complained, "What took you so long? I've waited ages."
Zamond was standing there with one of his hands in his pant pocket, his face frigid. He finally found his voice again.
"Why are you here? And how do you know I live here?"
Evianne, having found a second wind, gave a charming smile with a lift of her brows. "I got my own bag of tricks. Just open the door."
She pointed at Zamond's apartment door and gave an instruction.
Zamond stayed where he was, looking at her coldly.
Evianne gave a shudder of fear beneath his forbidding gaze. She rubbed her hands against her arms and curled her lip. "Fine. I hired a private detective."
"Evianne Moone."
He called her by her full name, his voice imbued with anger.
Evianne knew that she was in the wrong. She pulled her shoulders in a little, walked over and ingratiatingly entwined her arm around his.
She lifted her well-featured face with a sweet smile. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry."
"For what?"
Evianne blinked her liquid eyes and replied honestly, "For having hired a private detective to look into you. I swear…" She lifted her hand as if taking an oath, and said in deadly earnest, "I only had the private detective find out where you lived. Nothing else."
"…"
Zamond made no reply. He just looked at her, seemingly wondering if she was telling the truth.
Evianne pressed her lips together. "I promise I won't do it again. The next time I want to know something about you, I won't hire a private detective. I'll ask you directly, okay? But I think you won't tell me. Am I right?"
"Yeah."
Evianne's eyes widened with annoyance.
Zamond wrenched his arm free from the crook of her arm and strode toward the front door of his apartment.
Evianne was angry for two seconds before she obsequiously followed him. "I bought groceries. You haven't had dinner yet, right? I'll cook for you."
The door opened with a beep.
Zamond blocked the door with his arm, his brows knitted, looking at Evianne who had shopping bags in both hands.
"That's not necessary."
"It is. It is," Evianne smiled. "You don't have to be so polite. I'm a very good cook."
"I said, it's not ne—"
Before he could finish his sentence, Evianne ducked through the door from under his arm.
"Where's the kitchen? Oh, it's here."
As Zamond heard her answer her own question, his temples twitched, his face darkening.
He felt that maybe he had made the wrong decision by agreeing to marry her.
Obedient? Pleasing to the eye?
Leaving aside whether she was pleasing to the eye, it was very obvious she was not obedient.
Zamond closed the front door and walked into the kitchen as well.
He leaned against the door frame and watched as Evianne pulled the things in the shopping bags one by one.
Evianne turned to look at Zamond's inscrutable eyes and beamed, "Go take a shower and change clothes. I cook fast. The dinner will soon be ready."
Kneading his brows, Zamond swiveled his head aside and said coldly, "Get out."
"No!" Evianne was holding a potato, her thin brows knitted. "I'm not leaving!"
They stared at each other in silence for a long while. Unexpectedly, Zamond was the one who compromised eventually.
His mouth curled in a faint sneer as he straightened himself. "Suit yourself," he said, turning to leave.
Hearing the sound of his receding footsteps, Evianne felt relieved.
She weighed the potato in her hand and smiled confidently, "The first step to win a man's heart is to impress him with culinary skills. Zamond, your heart is mine. The meal I cook will blow your mind!"
A trail of clothes Zamond had taken off led from the bedroom door all the way to the bathroom.
Zamond's well-built figure could be vaguely seen amid a spray of water under the shower-head.
Wide of shoulder and narrow of waist, he was perfectly proportioned and very muscular.
He braced his hands against the wall, letting water run down his healthy tanned skin continuously.
Evianne poured the ready-made stock into a marmite, added a lot of seasoning to it, boiled it with high heat and then lowered the heat to let the soup simmer.
She spared some time to look for Zamond in the bedroom.
On pushing the door open, she saw the mess in the room.
This guy's so different at home.
Evianne picked up the clothes that Zamond had carelessly tossed to the floor before she went to the bathroom door.
With a sly smile, she knocked.
After she knocked three times, the sound of running water inside the bathroom stopped.
Knowing that he was listening, Evianne asked, "Do you need me to bring you a change of clothes?"
Seconds later, the bathroom door abruptly opened.
"Aargh!" Evianne covered her eyes with an exclamation.
How—How could he walk out without even a bath towel around his waist?!
Zamond looked at her sarcastically, his eyes cold.
Seriously? She's pretending to be shy?
She forgot how bold she'd been when climbing onto my bed to seduce me.
"Well, I think you don't need that. Uh, take your time with your shower. I'll go cook dinner."
With that Evianne spun around and fled the bedroom.
Standing with her back against the door, she panted heavily.
She had wanted to titillate him, but she had gotten counter-titillated instead.
When both her breathing and heartbeat returned to normal, she hastened toward the kitchen.
I should just focus on the cooking.
Zamond, after shower, opened the bedroom door, walked out and was greeted by the aroma of food.
Nobody had ever cooked in this apartment before. The unexpected aroma made his mind wander momentarily.
He leisurely walked toward the kitchen. On entering the dining room, he caught sight of Evianne placing dishes onto the dining table.
"You've finished your shower," Evianne smiled at him, putting down a plate.
Zamond's eyes moved from her face to the food on the plate.
He did not see the blackened mess he had expected to see. It was really a dish.
Having noticed that he was staring at the dishes in amazement, Evianne was both proud and complacent. She said smugly, "I really know how to cook. You thought I was lying? Come and sit. Dinner will soon be ready."
There were two meat dishes, two vegetarian dishes and a bowl of soup: fillet steak, chicken curry, gazpacho, tater tots and oxtail soup.
All of them looked and smelled tantalizing.
Zamond poked the bright-colored steak with a fork and lifted his brows. "You cooked this?"
"Mhm," Evianne said, her chin rested on her hands. Then she filled a plate with spaghetti and handed it to him. "Give it a shot."
"Are you sure you cooked these? They're not heated takeout?"
Evianne rolled her eyes and said through clenched teeth, "They're really freaking… Ahem, I did cook these. Do you want to see the proof in the kitchen?"
Zamond cut off a piece of steak, impaled it on his fork, took a look at it and then put it into his mouth, looking so serious as if he were about to sign an important contract.
Evianne looked at him expectantly. After he swallowed it, she immediately asked, "What do you think? Does it taste good?"
Surprisingly, it was really delicious.
Zamond narrowed his eyes a little and put down his knife and fork.
"Eek? Why did you stop eating?"
"You came here purely to cook for me?"
Damn it!
Why does this guy always have to be so smart?!
