SHIFTING BOUNDARIES

Chapter 5: Shifting Boundaries The office buzzed with quiet energy the next morning, but Kai moved through it in a haze. He tried to focus on his tasks, tried to bury himself in lines and colors, in sketches and presentations. But every time his mind wandered, it circled back to the way Aiden had looked at him yesterday. That glint of pride, that subtle warmth. It unsettled him more than the man’s insults ever had. Kai shook his head and scribbled furiously on his sketchpad, pretending he didn’t notice the curious looks a few colleagues shot him. He could almost hear them whispering: The new guy’s already in the boss’s orbit. He hated that they weren’t wrong. By noon, Aiden’s voice cut across the design floor like a blade. “Kai. My office.” Kai stiffened. Every head turned. He pretended not to notice, tucking his sketchpad under his arm and following. Aiden didn’t wait for him, already striding down the corridor, sharp and precise in his tailored suit. Inside the glass-walled office, the door clicked shut behind them. Aiden gestured toward the chair across from his desk. “Sit.” Kai bristled. “I’m not a dog.” “Then don’t bite when I offer you something good,” Aiden said smoothly, ignoring the glare Kai shot him. He slid a folder across the desk. Kai hesitated before opening it and froze. Inside were contracts, event details, glossy promotional materials. “This is the upcoming showcase?” Kai asked slowly, his pulse quickening. The annual design showcase was a big deal where the company unveiled its latest line to press and investors. “You’re leading the presentation,” Aiden said, voice casual, as though he hadn’t just dropped a bomb. Kai’s head snapped up. “What? No. Absolutely not.” “Yes,” Aiden countered, leaning back in his chair. “You earned it yesterday. Don’t tell me you’d rather sit in the shadows after you just proved you can shine.” Kai’s mouth opened, then closed. He wanted to argue. He wanted to insist this was a setup, another impossible test. But part of him the reckless, ambitious part thrilled at the idea. Still, he crossed his arms stubbornly. “Why me? You could have anyone up there. You. You love the spotlight.” Aiden’s lips curved into a small, knowing smile. “Because when you stood in front of the board yesterday, the room listened. Not because of me. Not because of the company’s reputation. They listened to you. That’s rare.” Kai’s breath caught. For a moment, the sincerity in Aiden’s tone disarmed him. But then he shook his head, scoffing. “You always know exactly what to say, don’t you? Manipulation must be your first language.” “If I were manipulating you,” Aiden said softly, “you’d already be saying yes.” Kai’s cheeks burned. He pushed the folder back across the desk. “Fine. I’ll do it. But don’t think for a second it’s because you asked me to.” “Of course not,” Aiden murmured, amusement glinting in his eyes. --- The days leading up to the showcase were brutal. Kai barely left the office, refining his designs, rehearsing his pitch, tweaking every detail until exhaustion blurred his vision. Aiden was everywhere hovering over his shoulder, challenging his choices, pushing him harder. But it wasn’t just criticism anymore. Sometimes Aiden’s voice would drop, unexpectedly warm. “That’s clever.” “Good instinct.” “Keep that one, it’s strong.” Each rare word of praise lodged itself in Kai’s chest, heavy and confusing. He told himself he didn’t care. That he was only enduring Aiden because he wanted to prove himself. But when he caught Aiden watching him late at night, both of them the last ones in the office, the truth pressed harder against his ribs. One evening, the tension finally broke. Kai stood by the window, city lights spilling like stars beneath them, trying to steady his breathing after hours of rehearsals. He felt frayed, stretched too thin. Aiden approached quietly, his reflection merging with Kai’s in the glass. “You’re overthinking it,” Aiden said. Kai huffed a bitter laugh. “Easy for you to say. You thrive on pressure. I’m drowning in it.” “Drowning?” Aiden’s tone softened. “From where I’m standing, you’re swimming circles around the rest of them.” Kai turned, startled by the rare gentleness in his voice. Their eyes locked, and for a long, breathless moment, neither looked away. The world outside blurred into insignificance. “Why do you do this?” Kai whispered, the words slipping out. “Push me so hard, tear me apart, then act like you actually… care?” Aiden’s jaw tightened. His gaze flicked to Kai’s lips before darting back up. “Because you’re worth pushing.” The silence that followed was electric, humming with everything unspoken. Kai’s heart thudded violently. For the first time, he realized just how close Aiden was close enough that if he leaned forward an inch Aiden stepped back abruptly, breaking the spell. His mask slid neatly back into place. “Don’t stay too late. You’ll ruin tomorrow’s pitch if you burn yourself out.” And just like that, he was gone, leaving Kai staring at the door, furious at himself for wanting more. --- The day of the showcase arrived in a blur of nerves and flashing cameras. The venue glittered with chandeliers, the air thick with money and ambition. Kai stood backstage, hands clammy, heart pounding. “You’ll do fine,” Aiden said quietly, appearing at his side. Kai snorted. “That’s the first nice thing you’ve said today.” “Don’t get used to it,” Aiden replied, though his voice lacked its usual bite. He adjusted Kai’s tie without asking, his fingers brushing lightly against Kai’s throat. The touch was brief, professional but it lingered like fire on Kai’s skin. When Kai stepped onto the stage, the crowd stretched endlessly before him. But instead of panicking, he searched the front row until he found Aiden’s gaze. Steady. Unwavering. Like an anchor. And somehow, that was enough. The words flowed, smoother than in rehearsal. His passion lit up the designs on the massive screen, pulling the audience into his vision. By the time he finished, the applause was thunderous, echoing through his bones. Backstage, his chest heaved with adrenaline. Aiden approached, expression unreadable. “Well?” Kai asked breathlessly. “Did I pass your impossible standards?” For a moment, Aiden just looked at him, something unguarded flickering in his eyes. Then he said quietly, “You were extraordinary.” The sincerity in his voice made Kai’s throat tighten. He opened his mouth to reply, but the crowd swelled around them—executives, reporters, investors—pulling them apart. And yet, as Kai was swept into handshakes and congratulations, he could still feel Aiden’s gaze on him. Steady. Unrelenting. Like a promise he wasn’t ready to name. That night, long after the showcase ended and the city quieted, Kai collapsed on his bed, exhaustion tugging at him. But instead of sleep, memories of the day replayed in vivid flashes. The way Aiden had adjusted his tie. The pride in his eyes. The softness in his voice. Something was shifting between them. Something dangerous. Kai wasn’t sure if he should fight it or let himself fall.
